@EverythingXen: I've just quoted your line in my signature. The symmetrical sentence sounds so great. I hope you won't mind. |

@ Patriot:
You seem to have a lot of the same questions that used to bother me. Maybe explaining my current understanding of science and religeon might help you consolidate your own oppinions somewhat:
1. There most likely is a God (It is the simplest explanation, and science says that the simplest explanation is most likelt the truth. I will explain why its the simplest shortly)
2. Most everything Science has "Proven beyond a reasonable doubt" is true.
Science and God are not mutualy exclusive. Science is simply the study of what God created.
Creation of Humans:
The Big bag did happen. People Did evolve from apes. etc
As Belairsclew said, we are in the realm that god created. So just because we evolved doesnt mean God didnt create us.
The reason a lot of people either beleive in the Bible OR Science and not both, is that they take the Bible too literally. They fail to remember that the Bible was written a long time ago for a people that knew almost nothing about Physics. If the Bible had been written in such a way that explained how the universe was created in a scientific way, the humans of that time would have just been confused. Regardless of the fact that the language did not even exist to explain such advanced concepts.
Creation of God:
God was not created.
Creation is a construct of time. Time did not exist until God brought our reality into existence.
If there is no time, and therefore no such thing as a Beginning or End, then how can something be created?
God exists outside of our reality. He exists outside of time. This also explains how he can know everything and be everwhere always.
People try to prove God does not exist by using Science. But the rules of Science as we know it do not apply outside of our reality.
Edit: Forgot to state why God is the simplest explanation:
God is basicaly just a Sentience that exists. The existence of this Sentience is a far simpler thing than the existence of our Reality (Matter, AntiMatter, Time, Space, Physics etc).
Well now that I have made everyone go "okaaay.....", I will retire _________________ IMHO my opinion is humble |

@Chekote
You're generally right on all counts. However, Scientific American has, without doubt, presented the ultimate way to determine whether God exists or not.

Also your religion can play an important role in your life.
What do you think that. _________________ (Firefox_Mythos)(Παντος)Reaperfox(Ρουβαλης)Tezafox Katsaridoktono(Ντουσικος)Che(Ταγαρης)Crusader(nokos)shadowfox(Μηχελης)aquafox(Στελιος)thunderfox_gomos(Γιωργος) |

Sure religion can play an important role in your life. So can the country you grow up in. So can your choice of footwear. Anything can if you let it. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

Religion affects your life profoundly, more so that most other things can even if you wanted them to. Your religion affects your mindset, which in turn affects your life MORE THAN ANY OTHER FACTOR.
Religion also affects the country you live in, perhaps more than another single factor affects a country. This effect on nations makes religion one of the biggest indirect influences on your life on your life as well. (Even if you think you have know religion.) _________________ Always with you what can not be done. Hear you nothing that I say? - Master Yoda

Total surrender is one of the basic cost for religion. Any one who does not give up everything s/he has cannot be a disciple of God.

The bible has many things not correct sime others not clear and many mistakes. All those because it was man-made and humen are not perfect, they make mistakes and can't fully understtand the wisdom of God:
1)how could we know that that rocks and minerals were created before plants and those before animals? (ex. Genesis A' 1, 1-2)
2) Why does the Bible allways talk about the "sons of God" who made children with the "daughters of people" (ex. Genesis 6, 1-2)
3)Why does the Bible mention "Giants"?What were they? Were they a race before ours? Were they as intelligent as us? Did they make the gigantic buildings? (ex. Genesis 6, 4)
4) Moses tells us of the destruction of Sodma and Gomora. Why does the angel warn Lot to save himself and his family? (Genesis A' 19, 1)
5) Do the angels posess a powersource not known to the people? Maybe nuclear? (Genesis A' 19, 15-20)
6)"If Lot didn't bring the sacred rock to the Angels they would punish him." From when are there sacred rocks? Maybe it's Uranium? Isn't God supposed to love humen? Why do his angels threaten to punish him? Are they greedy? classic human response. (Genesis A' 19, 19)
7)How does Iezekil build an optical illusionlike those we build today? (Genesis A' 21, 15-19)
and my personal favorite:
8)Was the Ark of the covenant charged with electrism? (Exodus LG' 35, 20-23) |

Belief in God, or gods, does not, and IMHO should not, have to be tied to a book or a scroll.
Over the weekend I had to defuse an argument between a couple of 12 year olds concerning religion. They were arguing about Christianity versus Science - I was pretty impressed ... I got dragged in to describe the current accretion model of solar system.
Anyway, after a brief explanation of the current accrection model (toned down for the audience, complete with an experiment to demonstrate some of the mechanics involved) we all decided that the important part of religion AND science is 'faith'. Defined in this case by blind acceptance.
The science person was confounded that logic is flawed ("I always lie"), while the relgious one was confounded by the sheer mass of scientific knowledge and how it all tied together and is very self consistant and has allowed new knowelge to come into being by extraplation models, making predicitons and testing them (okay so I a little cheated there, but heck they are only 12, and religious contridictions are not my strong point!).
So the argument was settled with the conclusion (drawn by the boys, not me ... although I have to admit to nudging in that direction *grin*) that each belief system is just as valid as the other, and both had something to bring to the table. They then went off and played nicely for the rest of the day. _________________ =Member of The Nonflamers' Guild=

My point of view is that there is no real need to ask ,"is there a God?" there is obviously a God. Rather the question is, "do you believe God is all-knowing and all-powerful?"
Two painfully obvious facts.
1. We are here.
2. Someone or something put us here.
Whatever put us here is God? So which do you believe?...Do you believe it was an intelligent being that no one can see? or.. Do you believe it was a unliving dot that exploded on its own for no reason?
Your answer to this question (once again) tells more about you and your view of the world than it does about the world itself (one answer is the truth, no matter what we believe about it). If you believe God is intelligent, then you believe that there is someone above man that all men must answer to, and people should act according to his direction, even when no man can discipline them. If you believe that there is no intelligent God, then man answers to no one, and a man who is strong enough to rape and pillage the world is justified in doing so.

Give up what? That's like saying I have to surrender my money to get a new car. Adhereing to a religion (at least Christianity) makes your life better, not worse. The only thing to give up is self-righteousness (which many religious people manage to keep), and bad habits which you should give up anyway. _________________ Always with you what can not be done.
