Avernum 4 for Mac Launches

A short and simple message at the Spiderweb site announces Avernum 4 has been released for the Mac, with the Windows version due "early 2006". Here's a bit from the Avernum 4 page:
Spiderweb Software, makers of the award-winning Avernum and Geneforge series, happily announces the release of Avernum 4, the long-awaited, all-new continuation to the Avernum series. This epic fantasy-roleplaying adventure returns you to the enormous underworld nation of Avernum, whose shadowy lands are once again facing horrible peril.

Avernum is a nation underground. Its pale people live in endless miles of tunnels, pits, and gigantic caverns. Some come to Avernum to work the mines. Others come to hunt monsters for their treasure. And some risk life in the underworld because it is the only place where a person can be free from the total rule of the Empire.

But life in Avernum just became a lot more dangerous. All at once, everything has gone wrong. The savages and dark creatures of the lower tunnels, once beaten into submission, have returned. Gigantic beasts, shielded by powerful magic, have taken up residence in the cities, wandering and killing at random. And normally peaceful citizens have been afflicted by a strange, overwhelming paranoia, making even regular townsfolk unpredictable and dangerous.
Thanks, Bargeral.

Excellent! I love these games, and since I'm "platform agnostic" I already have it on my Mac and played a bit before work.

Too bad about the price - I think that the $20 hurdle will be a bit of a barrier ... not that it isn't deserved, I just hope it doesn't mess with the sales.

I'm curious to see if Jeff has done anything new this time. Geneforge 3 was a rehash of Geneforge 2 which had very little new over Geneforge 1. The storyline was basically the same in all three tales. If Avernum 4 is 90% like Avernum 3, I don't see Spiderweb staying in business much longer. The low-end everything else, means that the storylines and quests HAVE to be fresh. Supposedly the engine's been updated but I sure couldn't tell it from the screenshots. Jeff may need to bite the bullet, and purchase an engine. Maybe he could buy the TOEE engine cheap.

*drools* Wouldn't that be nice ... that was one of the standout things for me about that game.

I've only just started - too busy with Gothic II Gold and other stuff - so it is too early for me to know what the whole thing is like.

I've never played the others, so I'm looking forward to this, even if it is a re-hash of the others. I admit, I'm a graphics junkie. But I did really enjoy the demo and I knew this was coming out soon, so I've been watching it and plan on scooping it up once it does (PC version, that is).

BTW a decade on the internet and it's the first time I've submited and news item and been first. Imagine what could happen in another decade.
