Eschalon: Book 1 - Revealed

One of our Editors discovered this interesting title on the web...indie developer Basilisk Games is working on Eschalon: Book 1. The company mission says " Single player. Turn based. Stat heavy. Story driven." and the feature list will be pleasing to old-school RPG players. Although not officially announced, the site claims the game is currently in Alpha and due to be released Q1 06:
Eschalon: Book I will take you across massive outdoor environments and deep into dozens of sprawling dungeons as you seek to uncover the mystery of who - or what - you are.

Hundreds of items and dozens creatures to discover. A combination of randomly generated treasure and carefully hidden goodies.

An non-linear storyline that can be played at your pace. As you struggle to uncover the secrets of your past, you must decide where to go and who to trust. The game world is yours to discover- just be careful not to get yourself in too deep, too soon!

Unlimited character development style...Choose from 25 unique skills to make the character you want and 8 base attributes that affect your character's every action throughout the game.

A turn-based yet fluid combat system keeps the action feeling near real-time. Strategy is key in Eschalon- careful skill management, weapon choice and magic usage will win your fights, not rapid button clicking. We are very pleased to say this is not another "action RPG".

An epic adventure that you face alone...a single-player RPG carefully designed to feel like the great RPGs of the past such as Ultima®, Might & Magic®, and Wizardry®.

There are no screens on the site yet be we uncovered this one at a development site, revealing nice, clean 2D art. Thanks, Moxie.

It looks nice, kinda like D2, in graphics.

Looking forward to it

Please try to get an interview Dhruin. It'd be nice to play something turn-based again. The one screenshot looks good enough that the game won't be an eyesore. That's good enough!

I emailed Basilisk last night and we should be able to organise a feature or two from the end of January forwards.

Looks like it could be a keeper, I just hope there is some depth to the combat. It's not easy to do good turn based non party combat.

I agree. Even games with semi-party TB is annoying, like dogmeat doing his own thing. Or the animal companions in toee (after the pathc that made them not take up a party slot). Or the ogre guy opening up his mini-guns into your character in fo2.

Looks great. Now I just hope it turns out as good as it looks, or even comes out at all.
