Spiderweb Software has officially unveiled Avernum 4. Here's the deal:
Spiderweb Software, makers of the award-winning Avernum and Geneforge series, happily announces the upcoming release of Avernum 4, the long-awaited, all-new continuation to the Avernum series. This epic fantasy-roleplaying adventure will return you to the enormous underworld nation of Avernum, whose shadowy lands are once again facing horrible peril.

Avernum is a nation underground. Its pale people live in endless miles of tunnels, pits, and gigantic caverns. Some come to Avernum to work the mines. Others come to hunt monsters for their treasure. And some risk life in the underworld because it is the only place where a person can be free from the total rule of the Empire.

But life in Avernum just became a lot more dangerous. All at once, everything has gone wrong. The savages and dark creatures of the lower tunnels, once beaten into submission, have returned. Gigantic beasts, shielded by powerful magic, have taken up residence in the cities, wandering and killing at random. And normally peaceful citizens have been afflicted by a strange, overwhelming paranoia, making even regular townsfolk unpredictable and dangerous.

Nobody knows why these disasters occurre. But you, through good luck (or bad), have stumbled upon a clue. And thus, you become involved in a shadowy war and a deadly struggle, which will take you through strange lands, bandit cities, and the darkest depths of the underworld. Your mission: discover who has attacked your homeland, and stop them. Before everything falls apart.

Avernum 4 is an enormous fantasy role-playing adventure. Wander a gigantic world, full of multitudes of characters, hundreds of side quests, and traps, tricks, and treasure in every corner. Experience the life of an adventurer: the fame, the wealth, the hapless townsfolk begging you for help at every turn! This epic tale is guaranteed to give you weeks of entertainment, with an impossibly huge world that dares you to uncover all of its secrets.

Prior experience with the Avernum series is completely unnecessary to enjoy Avernum 4. Avernum 4 will be $25, or $32 with a hint book, and should be out in early 2006.
The first set of screens can be found here. |

Has anyone here played any of Spiderweb's games. Are any of them worth downloading? |

I'm a big fan of Spiderweb games. They're quite excellent.
Don't let the graphics fool you. It's the gameplay that counts. |

Afaik Spiderweb´s games are very good old-school RPGs. They´re dead serious about producing deep games which concentrate on content. If you can overlook the graphics and like the RPGs of the good old days you should definitely give them a shot. _________________ Webmaster GothicDot |

Are they like turn-based D&D games like Pool of Radiance or Temple of Elemental Evil? How similar are they to a game like Baldurs Gate? What is the best comparison? |

A good comparison would be to the old Ultima games, but with more options. Big worlds, lots of good gameplay, and a good character system. It is turn-based, but is more like Fallout's version of turn-based since it uses action points.
I've enjoyed every Spiderweb game that I've played, and I've played a lot of them. _________________ Freeeeeeedom! Thank heavens it's summer!
