I never meant to imply otherwise. I was simply saying why I don’t understand the objection to Major League Baseball, or the National Football League, using the term ‘world champions.’ |

@ Mage of fire
I didnt see that, but then again I dont ever watch sports.
But its still the same reasons. They are obviously getting more funding for "Soccer" in the US than American Football gets in other countries. _________________ IMHO my opinion is humble |

'baseball'. Another word to express 'boredom' and such.
And give me a break with 'soccer'. Only a sucker would call football 'soccer'. I hope I wasn't too harsh in expressing my opinion _________________ "Niciodata nu e prea tarziu

I don't get the point here.
FOOTBALL is the sport the whole world play except the yanks. The yanks can't play football. Why? Because they don't understand it. They needed violence and invented their own 'football'. They seem not to understand that the rule #1 in football is: 'Don't put your hands on the goddamned ball!". So this 'grab the ball and run like a panic-stricken monkey' needed a name. And they called it 'american football'. Funny? No, hilarious. _________________ "Niciodata nu e prea tarziu

Well, this thread has turned into a bit of a mess... I must apologise; I can't help but feel at least partially responsible because of my first comment.

Because "the world" has nothing to do with it? Just because they don't let anyone else in doesn't mean they're the best, it just means they haven't checked. Anyway, can someone call themselves a "World Frog-Painting Champion", just because noone else paints frogs?

Baseball is one of those funny typically-American things. Noone else in the world can get worked up about it, indeed in England we have a game basically the same called "Rounders". Those feeling unkind often point out that it's only played in primary schools and that kids grow out of it pretty quick, but I would never be so inflamatory.
And as for the naming mix-up, I wouldn't worry about it really. It's a shame there's the potential for confusion, but it's not worth an argument over. Languages and cultures always have their little nuances you just need to get used to, like the difference between "road" and "pavement" and "pavement" and "sidewalk". It makes life interesting.

I have to say the sheer amount of armour those guys wear is incredible. What with the relentless march of technology I look forward to the day that a new game evolves from American Football, where the players wear exoskeletons and use various types of powered weaponry.
There are a lot of other violent games out there though - you can't blame the Americans for them. Like rugby, for instance. Although they don't use armour in rugby. Well, some people put a band around their head to stop their ears being torn off while in a scrum, but that's not armour as such... _________________ Charlie Dobbie

Well Football is obviously Football because you play with your feet. I have yet to understand the reason for calling American Football, Football at all.
Damn, I sound like Dr. Seuss _________________ IMHO my opinion is humble |

Well, I don't blame them the yanks but let's face it, they enjoy violence. Wrestling? American Football? Box? Bush? It's all about violence.
And no, I don't think rugby is a violent sport.

Wait, wait... I have a comment: People that would get confused about football,
deserve their fate. You can't do anything about it _________________ "Niciodata nu e prea tarziu
