zTexCacheSizeMaxBytes = ?
   

I'm about to start playing around a bit with my Gothic.ini file, but thought I'd ask around first.

Has anyone played around with the following settings in the Gothic.ini?

I'm running 1GB DDR and am wondering if increasing these would really offer up better performance. Anyone played around with these settings at all? I guess I could double them and see what happens

Doubling the cache size is an good point to start with, yes.

Here's my machine

- No over clocking
- 1GB DDR + 1024MB fixed swap on C:
- Detonator FX 44.03 (best quality)
- Graphics aperture size is 128MB
- NForce 2.03
- C: & the game drive defragged

First I doubled every value, then tripled and noticed no apparent difference between them. Doubling the values produced a noticeable difference though. After doubling, the annoying jerkiness while moving stopped almost entirely.

Another thing... the first city (haven't got to another yet) is playing very slowly. I use the F1-F4 keys to toggle between viewing distances. 1st city runs acceptable with F2 setting. The only thing that noticeably makes the framerate smoother is shortening the viewing distance.

Rain produces weird choppines in the framerate also.

After fiddling with all the ingame settings (resolution change doesn't help at all, while playing I use 1600x1200) and then the .ini values I've had no luck in running G2 smooth with the view distance at max. Maybe it's simply not possible with my rig :/

I have the same problem on a 3ghz P4. The unsatisfatory answer I have got from the technical crew of G2 is that the game was never meant to be run in the city at 300% and no matter your hardware, you will always get about 10-15FPS in some parts. So there's no fix, even on top of the range hardware for a game six months old.

Rain does strange shit for me too. Slows the game down, and is also ass-ugly. It looks like I have severe heat induced artifacting more than actual rain.

I have a 2700+/1gig/ATI 9800Pro.

OK as for the 100% view in the city thing, I can deal with it. Just F1 in the city to keep FPS at or around 30. But, what about Lobarts Farm? Why does the game start sucking there? Outside, like in one of the crop fields, I get pretty poor performance.

I believe Lobart's farm sucks because it's when you face towards the city, so the game is rendering the city as well. I just hope that the city is the ONLY cause of slow down in the game. I am unhappy about it slowing down on my hardware, which you can't really get much better PC than I have got at the moment (you couldn't even buy 3ghz CPUs when G2 was originally released). I'm sure it could be optimised in some way, although I don't think Piranha bytes are going to do that. At the minimum, someone could make a script that automatically decreases view distance when you near the city.

I had horrible performance in Valley, but doubling the cache values seemed to cure all my problems! Thanks for the tip, Gothic was almost unplayable in the valley before...

(my machine is amd2500+, 1GB memory, radeon 9600pro)

I only have 768MB RAM so I assumed that I would be pushing it too far if I DOUBLED that values, so I added half of the existing sizes and added it to them, so 240000 ended up 360000.

But just to be sure, would I be pushing things if I doubled those values?? I was having some issues with my player stuttering a bit in the forest when running even tho the FPS was reading 20-25 FPS. So I changed those 4 values and noticed a nice improvement. However, my player still have some of that stuttering problem..

I made a copy of the original un-altered INI before I made ANY changes at all, but I suppose I could make a second copy of the currently altered one as well just to try it..

How do I know if it will work or not? Do I get some kinda error?
