I hate to be the odd one out, but there is something that bothers me about the Demo. Did anybody notice how similar to Morowind this is?

The barter system icons between G2 and Morrowind are very similar.
Your now trading Gold (but that was expected).
The box cover is the same color, and almost the same design.
There are even large rats that jump out and attak you.

Those are just somethings I've notice playing the demo. I hope it's not worse in the actuall game. I really like Gothic 1 because it was unique, I hope they don't copy too much from other games.

Morowind had so many weapons and creatures that it's really hard to make a game without even one simillar creature. And about the box, let's not get
touchy it's jsut a box

to the demo

Well I don´t have it but I play the full version, I have to comment a little bit. First of all memory, the game is very demanding, it trys to avoid scenery loading as much as possible. So having it running smoothly, RAM is the key issue, you need a 32 MB graphics card to avoid constant texture moving between the card and main memory (have you looked at some of the textures they are huge). I´m not sure how much main memory is good for best performance since I have a developers machine (no I don´t work for PB, but I´m a developer outside of the gaming area
and my baby has around 700 meg, but I think from my point of view, that an average XP system with 256 MB won´t be too happy. The problem I see is that XP memory usage grows fatter and fatter the more it is installed thanks to excessive preloading of certain apps. A newly installed and/or rather clean XP system might handle the game without too much disk swapping but given the state of the average XP system you might need more ram for good performance. Win98 is a completely different beast in this regard, I think 256 MB might be enough.

Now to the controls, they are different once you play around with them, notice for instance, the ctrl key now is a general action key which does it all, no mor ctrl up ctrl down to do various things outside of fighting. Alt usuall moves all in the inventory.

Fighting, same similar style but different, first notice the speed of the fights, much faster in the early stages, thus more difficult and you instantly run into harder monsters, then try to key the ctrl key pressed, you char will automatically turn into the direction of the moving focused enemy.

Now to the size of the demo, as far as I know, I haven´t seen the dem yet you see, the surrounding of Xardas tower, I´m not sure if the hidden vally is in, the path down with the farmer and parts (about 1rd of the city excluding the higher city and the harbour area (which is more interesting)
so not too big, If I judge the size it is about 1/10th of the area you cover in the first chapter (which is the first map of three you seem to be able to reach on the island)

I hope this sums everything up.

The new 1-click-combat-interface is very different from the old one. I don´t really like it, but it´s definitely more accessible.
PB made it more than clear that they designed the game for the old combat interface and without use of the quicksave option. The new stuff are, I guess, compromises for reviewers and for people who played too much Diablo.

256 MB RAM are the minimum requirements. 512 MB (or maybe 384 MB on Win98) is were the fun starts.

Well, the demo runs OK on Athlon 1700+, GForce2 GTS 64, 512 MB. Controls are noticably more responsible than in G1. The world is very beatifull and detailed. Exploration and climbing in particular , are very rewarding: hidden places, corpes, scrolls, portions, pirates' treasures, a shipwrak just to name a few..

One complain though about the sky having low-quality textures and suffering from banding. I hope it is just a demo. So far I am very impressed: can't wait to get the full game.

The characters are speaking modern real life German. So you´ll get a free crash course.

Okay folks, please keep the discussion in here spoiler free. I just split this topic in two... you'll find the other half (with the spoilers ) over at the Gothic 2 Spoilers forum.

The demo has more than 10-15 minutes ...

You can play during a lot of days... you just need to jump over rocks in a speciific spot to find a lot of other monsters.

And for the information... I have a little computer and the demo works perfectly:

PIII 450
320 Megs
GeForce 2 MX 400
Win 98 SE

That's what I figured. It may improve my (not so) "leet German language skillz". :p

Why wait for something you know, when there's the opportunity to learn something new in the meanwhile? Besides, I think the 'foreign' language really adds to the sense of adventure. RPG's are largely about improving ones skills... in Ultima Underground the player had to learn the tongue of the lizards ("Bica yessor'click"). From my POV, it's like PB have pushed the concept even further. You German guys are missing the best part of the game.
