Problem with combat

There is probably some obvious reason or solution to this..

When I try to do a combo or a side svipe after attacking forward (pressing up) my char just strife..Im holding the target button in the whole time and have tried 2 bind it 2 different keys..I think this was a minor bug (or atleast it happened so seldom i thought it a bug) in the first game but here its constant....Am i missing the finer points of the combat system?
Has this happened 2 any1 else?
Also..In the options menu you can turn off gothic 1 combat style\rules, but nothing seems 2 change.. Whats the difference if any?
