Although it's moving further away from our area of interest, Warren Spector penned the second of his Gaming at the Margins editorials for The Escapist, titled <a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/issue/38/4" target="_blank">Who Are We, Who Do We Want To Be?</a><em><blockquote>I don't know about you, but I feel like there's a target painted on my chest. I think he's lost it, maybe he never had it. His name is connected to some of the greatest games of all time, but he didn't do any of them solo. Doug Church is credited on most of them too. And I've never let a MMOG get more than a week or two of my cash before I cancelled. Every developer/publisher wants a piece of the MMOG pie and few are clever enough to earn it. (Blizzard? Their reign will end.) But don't despair there is always the console market. |

I agree that he may be a bit of a has been as far as game design is concerned (Doesn't he still think Deus Ex 2 was a great game?), but I should point out that just because you as an individual refuse to pay MMORPG fees doesn't change the fact that many millions of people do. If Blizzard's reign does fall that's even more reason for other companies to want to get into the market as currently competing with Blizzard is probably the single biggest obstacle to entry. |

I dont know, I just cant get riled by "gamer oppression", or the perception of it. It's just so funny to me, with all the ills and woes and true oppression of people, the thought of a kid having to wait til he's 18 to buy a restricted game, or people making harsh comments about the nature of gamers, or other such outrages just fails to register any emotion with me whatsoever.
If the govt completely outlaws games, or people are locked out of a job opportunity because they are found to be a Doom III fan, or they are tossed in jail for playing a game, or the LAPD is caught on video giving some poor gamer the Rodney King style beatdown, then I'll listen.
Until then, I say "get a life", will ya.
