Best Radeon drivers for Morrowind and other questions. |
|
I'm going to be playing Morrowind with a Radeon 9700 Pro. Can any Radeon users out there confirm which Catalyst drivers are good with Morrowind? I'm currently running the 3.10's but I'm about to download the 4.1's. What are the major performance tweaks I should know about for Morrowind?
Also, what does the A.I. distance slider in the options menu do? |

Just so you know you're not being ignored-
GeForce user here, so I'm afraid I can't help on this one. _________________ =Proud Member of the Non-Flamers Guild=

Dang... I know there are lots of Morrowind players around here using Radeon cards. Well, I think my new system should be good enough to run Morrowind with all the options up. |

Just download the latest Catalyst drivers and you'll be good, IMO. |

Thanks. Hey, do you play with shadows on? If so, How much of a hit do you take? Reason I ask is because someone else with the same video card told me that shadows gave him a major problem in Morrowind. |

I run the game with shadows on I think. Pixel shaders on for sure. And at a res of 1600 x 1200. The viewing slider is set at least half way ....maybe more. No problems for me. Sure it slows down a bit in major cities ....but not to a slideshow lvl.
I'm running the 4.1 Catalyst drivers now ... on a 9800 Pro. AMD 2.4 Ghz with 1 Gb memory. |

I don't have anything overclocked. The chip is an AMD XP 2400 ....clock speed is less than 2.4 Ghz, just in case I confused you. |

Is that 1600 x 1200 with AA enabled? If so, to what degree? I plan on playing in 1024 x 768 with 4xAA and the view distance set to full. |

I have AA/AF set to application preference. At the moment it's set at AA x2. Drivers are set to "balanced" performance. To be honest I could probably increase the AA setting considering how well Radeons handle that function. But, I don't need to as at 1600 x 1200 the view is tremendous as it is.
You will always get some graphic lag in this game. But I never have unbearable results. I'm not a frame rates junkie. This game runs fairly smoothly for me though at these settings.
Previously I had a GeForce 4600 Ti . The radeon runs this game much, much better. I reckon increasing from 512MB to 1 Gb memory improved performance by a considerable margin too.
I originally started playing Morrowind on a 1.4Ghz AMD. Even with that, and the GeForce 4600 Ti and 512 MB memory I could run at 1024 x 800 res ( but without AA .... GeForce suffer badly in performance here ). |

I also went from a Geforce 4 to a Radeon card. I used to be a huge fan of Nvidia but I'll probably never go back to them as long as ATI keeps making cards of this quality.
The first system I tried to play Morrowind on was the one I had last year when I first bought Morrowind. It was an AthlonXP 1900+ with 256mb of PC2100, a Geforce 4 4200 and a 40 gig ATA100 WD hard drive. No matter how I tweaked the game it just wouldn't run smooth enough for my standard of play. I wasn't happy playing it with no AA and view distance at less than half so I just shelved Morrowind for the time.
Now I have an AthlonXP 3200+, 512mb of OCZ Platinum PC3200, a Radeon 9700PRO, and a 160 gig Maxtor special edition(ATA133, 8mb cache) running on an nForce 2 Ultra 400 MB.
Needless to say I'm quite happy now. |

Running Morrowind with 256Mb would have been your limiting factor.
You may still get some decent mileage in your new PC by adding in another 512Mb ..... it's usually a relatively cheap upgrade to do. |
