I read here that you can kill Canthar when he's in jail in chapter 1 thus saving yourself the trouble of dealing with him later on. The only trouble is i can't find the jail. I'd be grateful for directions to it.

It's right next to the marketplace. It's a big building in the northern end of the city. It's the place where the guards are training in the daytime

Its where Lord Andre is.
He is usially reading some book. Then you go left from there. (Left from looking where you enter the Barracks). Then some guy will start talking to you then you can open the cell with cwitches.

Kill him before you enter the city for the first time while he's sitting on the cart; much easier!!  Then watch his body float around from the street to the carpets at night!!!

i've gotta admit than i'm somewhat of an xp hound in that i not only sold him down the river, as it were, and then killed him while he was in jail but i even pickpocketed him beforehand (no wonder i ended up a merc ) |

well if you want to trade with the other merchants in the square i think it's necessary to give him the cash. personally while it may seem quite a bit of gold i found that i got plenty later and that i never ran out (well having pickpocket and stealing pretty much anything not nailed down always helps) |
