Spellmaking

I'm confused with the spell cost/chance design. I bought a pre-made scroll of open lock, that given my character's combat orientation, meant I couldn't cast very effectively ( or often without running out of mana ).

So, off I ran to Balmora and found a spellmaker in the mage's guild...and decided to make a lesser version of the open lock spell that I was more capable of casting . Strangely, as I was making the spell it calculated that I actually had LESS chance of casting it even though I was only requiring it to open 25 points worth as opposed to 50 points on the scroll. ( I had kept range to a minimum and range to touch only ).

Even stranger, when I went ahead and bought the spell the statistics changed .... to the same cost/chance ratio as the store bought spell which was clearly a superior in the level of locks it could open.

Can anyone explain to me what's going on here ? I'm confused. I've read posts stating that store bought spells are preset with better cost/chance ratio's than ones you make, which I will accept .... but ..... shouldn't the forecasted ratio's in the spellmaker actually work as stated and not change once bought ?

I'm a little confused here. You mention buying a scroll of Open that you couldn't cast very effectively? Scrolls always work, regardless of your abilities.

As a fighter, I wouldn't rely on your magical abilities at all if possible. Use scrolls of Open, learn a bit of Security skills and carry around a couple of Journeyman's Lockpicks. The Open scrolls are Ondusi's Unhinging (Open 20-40) and Eshack's Locksplitter (Open 100). The best way to obtain these is to raid smuggler's caves.

I'm afraid I can't help with the spellmaker - I'm mainly a fighter too. I get by perfectly fine with the lockpicks and scrolls mentioned above.

Thanks for reply.

My character is really a fighter/mage so ultimately I want his magic skills to be decent. What I intended to say in my previous post was that the generic open spell I bought ( not a scroll ) seems to be far more efficient in cost/chance to cast than if you create the same spell in spellmaker. Furthermore ... its seems spellmaker doesnt correctly state the cost/chance ratios as you "make" spells. The figures I get on completion don't match with those seen on tinkering.

Some premade spells are always more efficient then you could even make yourself. This is done to simulate the 'well known' spells, like the Melf's and Bigby's from D&D. The efficiency in the spellmaking menu seems to be influenced by things like stamina etc.
