krycek, i think the world bank is in a tough spot. they are businessmen and therefore are trying to run a profitable organization. to expect them to do otherwise seems misguided. so, if they come into a country and make demands it is in an effort to ensure a profit for the bank...not the country. i think it is high time that countries realized this. the world bank is not your friend any more than your local bank is. sure they are nice to you when they think that they can make a profit, but when you cross them watch out. if you think that the world bank is about morals and social justice your just plain wrong. to expect them to be an organization that is interested in anything other than profit is ridiculous--they are not a church organization nor are they your parents. they are wealthy business men & men of power. so don't act supprised when they turn around and make demands on your country or any other. _________________ "The origin of things, if things have an origin, cannot be revealed to me, if revealed at all, until I have travelled very far from it, and many revolutions of the sun must precede my first dawn. I'm not surprised that World Bank is not an angel,I've expected this ,actually first time I've heard about this name I knew this is not good, too bad cause they still have a lot of power. _________________ Guns don't kill people, people kill people!

It's just that the WTO and World Bank are trying to justify themselves by claiming to be "helping" countries. Like you said, they play really nice and understanding as long as it makes them money.
For example, in south-eastern Asia, dont remember the country (Indonesia?), they first loaned large sums of money to the government to get business going and supported the local seafood production. Then they demanded that their internal fishing waters should be opened to a selected few international seafood organisations. If they would not grant them permission to rob the waters and destroy the ecosystem, all of the loans would be withdrawn. So, the waters were opened and in a couple of years a whole ecosystem was killed. After that the companies moved elsewhere.
I don't mind the existence of a worldwide bank that does business with governments as long as it is clear about what it actually does. _________________ "If you can't get rid of the skeleton in your closet, you'd best teach it to dance."

well that is banks and the banking industry for you. i think it is very clear what the world bank is all about: MONEY. ofcourse they are going to claim that they are helping people and governments around the world, just like your local bank is going to say that it is great for the community. remember they helped sponsor your little league team or the school fair at your neighborhood school? but, they did it because of the good publicity and in hopes of drawing some parents into their institution. that is just business. just like the world bank on a larger scale does the same thing to countries. i think sometimes people want to believe all the hype and advertsing that these institutions put out and it is too bad that they do. _________________ "The origin of things, if things have an origin, cannot be revealed to me, if revealed at all, until I have travelled very far from it, and many revolutions of the sun must precede my first dawn. Let's not forget that there are different kinds of profits. If I said I would pay you $10mil to shoot your father, would you do what is necessary to make this profit? _________________ (@) |
