My Two Bit Thoughts on Arx

From playing the demo, I was very excited about this game well before it's release. Once it was released it took me a while to get it, but I did finally.

Now that I've beaten it (ten minutes ago), I must say that I didn't really enjoy the game as a whole. The first ten hours or so it was great... But it just went down from there.

This is probably the most frustrating game I've ever played. There are many parts in it where I just can't figure out what to do, and there are no clues anywhere. Example: Find Krahoz and Zohark. Hmmm... Okay. Any idea where they are? Anybody? Hello? By wandering around I find Alia in the Underground lake area, just pacing back and forth. Turns out she can help me. But I have to help her in return. Get the shield of ancients. 2nd level of the crypt, I'm told. Okay... where is the crypt? Anybody? Hello? Bueller? Bueller? And again, just by wandering around I happen to talk to Carlo, who happens to have the key to the crypt, which was right over *there* the whole time.

In the labyrinth of Lost Souls, there is a lever that lifts a wall up that allows me to get to the seventh lever. Well, there's a portcullis ( screenshot ) blocking my access to it. The walkthrough says nothing about this portcullis, and I pulled levers one by one trying to raise the thing (while going back and 'un-pulling' them when there was no success). I ended up using the 'special' stair-type rune to pass through it, and get to the lever. (though I think that whole situation could be a bug in the game)

And then there's the treasure hunt... God knows how many hours I've wasted on that thing, only to end up using the walkthough on where exactly 'in the troll' camp the note is, and every clue after that. If anybody did this without some sort of walkthrough, you have my kudos. Here, take em.

I have no problems with the interface, or the combat, or the magic casting, or anything else... Just the layout of the game. Not user friendly.

The graphics by the way, I felt are amazing. The textures used here are quite possibly the most detailed textures I've ever seen. My only problem with the video, is the size of the mana/health pools and other stuff (pre-cast scrolls, and hurting equipment) as it's displayed on the screen at resolutions other than 1024 x 768. They are easily 50% bigger in all the other resolutions, taking away from the rest of the atmosphere.....

So, here I go to uninstall it, and never play it again. Thank you all for your help. The search function is a little off on these forums, so it was hard finding the info that I needed so many times, but I did it, and at least 30% of what I did was because of something I read here, or the awesome .pdf walkthrough I downloaded.
