The panther is definely cool - My ranger kept one throughout the game - stealthy and dealy. But then, the ranger can't summon a pixie.
As a sorcerer or wizard, the pixie is very useful. Opens all the locks, disables traps, hard to hit (and therefore kill) and has sneak attack! You have all teh rogue skills you need and can get a bruiser or healer for your henchman. Though I played most of Chapter One without a henchman by having the pixie as familiar and summoning a badger or wolf and kept the extra experience points.
I have a druid who using the hawk which is pretty cool as it has disarm - comes in handy in fights. |

That backstab potential the panther has is pretty darn valuable. |

Currently, I am using the pixie as my familiar and Daelen Redtiger as my henchman. I really like the pixie's ability to disable traps, as my wizard has no skills of that type whatsoever.
When I was using Tomi Undergallows (rogue) as a henchman, I chose a familiar that was more of a fighter than the pixie. My two favorite fighters are the panther and the hellhound. The panther is stronger, but the hellhound has a nice fire spell that it uses.
I found the raven not very useful, and the fire mephit irritating. I have not tried the ice mephit, because I would assume it to be equally irritating.
I have pretty much settled on the Daelen Redtiger/pixie combination for two reasons - first, the pixie seems to get stuck less that Tomi Undergallows, and I don't have to hear 'Aye, it's done' any more. |

No familiar is better than the panther ... Yet the dire wolf is also good . Actually, I never used the familiar as a weapon, I just use it as a bait.
By the way, here's a very useful "hint": If you're a wizard or sorceror (not druid or ranger), you can summon a familiar, possess it and try to hit a trapped chest. Especially when the trap is deadly, it's very useful. Also, you can summon a familiar in some places where you ca't get, than possess it, and explore... |

For some reason, I like the faery dragon. But for usefulness, it's the pixie. _________________ The world is small, nasty and complicated, and everybody dies alone... - Sam Fisher |

Upgrade to the "enhanced familiar" package. It adds logical feats to some of the fam's, such as Knockdown for Dire Wolf and Panther. They're so much more useful when they can knock over baddies in combat. Even a wizard with a puny poking stick (a.k.a dagger) can hit an orc who's flat on the floor! |

i like the imp. it isn't the greatest familiar, but it seems to fit my neutral palemaster/wizard. _________________ "The origin of things, if things have an origin, cannot be revealed to me, if revealed at all, until I have travelled very far from it, and many revolutions of the sun must precede my first dawn. I have a dire boar. His name is Binky. Cute... but deadly (at least in the first 2 official campaigns. He's getting slaughtered in Hordes) _________________ In dreams I walk with you |
