difficult to say, they all have their pros and cons, first time thru i took the merc route, which is supposed to be the easiest at the start, but does get harder later, mage is hardest to start but easiest at the end...i'd reccomend playing 3 times

If you're a beginner I'd suggest the militia/paladin route, it's pretty easy/average throughout the whole game. Mage is hardest to start and easiest in the end, merc is hardest to finish and easier in the start.

I'm going to end up playing through all three, but I've only played Paladin so far. It was a little easy, but enjoyable.

The Paladin is definetly the easiest way to go, because you can concentrate on using spells as ranged weapon instead of bow/crossbow. The Paladinspells do far more damage than any ranged weapon(even more damage than melee weapons, but you have limited mana).

I never really used the runes I got as a Paladin, they just looked weak to me. I didn't train up in any archery until I ran into the Seekers (though I did gain some dex so I could wear a crossbow and so I could save the rare lockpicks).
