Compared to a normal Jedi lifespan, how long does it take for the Dark Side to consume you? Does the Sith naturally die sooner? Does the Sith simply become feeble and sickly without shortening his lifespan?
In "Episode I" Qui-Gon Jin Speaks of Anakin as, "the one who could bring balance to the force." What does that mean? _________________ Always with you what can not be done. Hear you nothing that I say? - Master Yoda

There are no 'official' answers to any of those... however, in the Extended Universe....
Palpatine was on his third clone, having burned out his original body (presumably the one seen in the current movies). The Emperor outlawed cloning technology and wiped out the water world race but kept several cloning tubes for his own personal use. WHen he was about to die he'd use the dark side of the Force to transfer his consciousness into the clone body and carry on...
And Anakin does bring balance to the Force. Anakin fathers Luke, then turns to the dark side and butchers all the Jedi (the Force was heavily unbalanced on the side of light) leaving only Yoda, Palpatine, Kenobi, and himself. That's technically balanced... but the Dark Side is much stronger than the light side (which is why a master and an apprentice are all the sith need to disrupt things and threaten the galaxy... or take it over... and also why Darth Maul was able to kill Qui Gon and why Dooku/Tyranus was able to mop the floor with Obi Wan and Anakin) that even numbers is not 'balanced'.
So Obi Wan dies, and Yoda die, leaving Luke, who turns Vader back to the light side, who destroys the Emperor and then dies... leaving only Luke, who walks a line between light and darkness and must constantly struggle to remain in the light.
The Force is at long last balanced. Of course, the first thing Wonderboy does is try to recreate the Jedi order.... thus paving the way for the cycle to begin again. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi
