a dumb question and maybe a not-dumb question

first the dumb question ... if I join the militia, can i no longer get training
from the mercenaries and if I join the mercenaries, will the militia attack
me in town?

DO I have to join the militia to be able to talk to Lord Hagen to move to
chapter 2?

Which is better to use Learning Points on ... strength? or one-handed swords?
I'm at strength of 75 and a fighter at 35%. Also who teaches crossbow?

Thanks guys/gals ! pormike

No. You can join the militia, mercs, or mages.....all have a way to talk to Lord Hagen

Well militia teachers at town don't want to teach mercaneries and reverse situation with mercaneries. No, you don't get attacked by militia even if you are a merc. They are just a bit unfriendly to you if you talk to them.. Or neither will mercaneries attack militia men.

No you don't need to join militia. You can join any of three guilds. As mercenary Lee will help you to get lord hagen, so don't worry. But you need to join a guild and see lord hagen.Only then will next chapter begin.

Well i'd say train some 1-handed swords.when you reach 60% in that skill your fighting techique becomes much better and faster. Also higher pergentage you have in melee skill(or ranged skill) better change you have to get critcal hits.So defiently train you sword fighting.

There are several crossbow teachers.

1) "Dragomir", the hunter sitting near to the tavern in the camp will train your crossbow skill if you find his lost crossbow and have 30 points in dexterity.

2) Militia has a crossbow teacher named "Ruga" at the baracks, but he will ONLY teach crossbow to militia men or paladins.

3) From the valley of mines you can find a paladin called "Udar" who can teach you crossbow even if you are a mercenary.

About the strength/skill issue:

Gothic 2 uses two kinds of hits:
- Basic hit: does 5-20 damage no matter how high your strength, weapon damage or skill is and disregarding the enemies armor. In other words you will always do SOME damage, Mostly it's too little to notice, but every hit does damage.
- Critical hit: this kind of hit use the following formula:
strength + weapondamage - enemy armor = damage

Your skill level is the percentage that decides how often you do a critical hit. Strength and Skill need eachother. With a high strength level but no skill you will only do Basic hits, and that's a waste of your strength. With a high skill level but no strength you will always do Critical hits but such a hit will hardly do any damage because you lack the strength to wield a powerful weapon.

I use the following guideline and it works pretty well:
Keep strength and skill at the same level, untill you become a master (more than 60% skill), now start pumping your strength level up and spend LP on strength and skill on a 2:1 of even 3:1 ratio (addon).
