Black Isle's Planescape: Torment has stormed up Gamespy's Most Underrated chart to land in <a href="http://www.gamespy.com/articles/september03/25underrated/index18.shtml" target="_blank">9th place</a>. Here's a snip:<blockquote><em>In addition to the story and setting, the game also sports mind-blowing spell effects, an innovative level progression scheme, incredibly well-written dialogue, and some of weirdest party members ever seen, including a succubus who has given up sex, an animated suit of armor, a cube, and a man on fire. While the sales is average, the fate of this game is as sad as the game's story  . It deserves better recognition.  .... |

This game will always stick in my memory as the best game I've ever played. There are some other fantastic games out there, but none of them had the depth and originality of PS-T.

Same here.
Five minutes after the final cutscene had ended I was still sitting in my chair staring with open mouth at the screen. It almost moved me to tears.

This is my 2nd favorite rpg ever... 2nd only to Ultima7.
I loved the gruesome dialog in Torment:
Nameless One: "Can you dig around in my body for anything?"
Marta: "Marta can do that, cancha Marta? Yes you can"
Nameless One: "Check the intestines... anything could be lodged in there"
Marta: You lie upon the table, and Marta stands over you, a rusty knife at the ready. There is a stabbing pain as she slices into your abdomen, then cuts brutally downwords in a saw-like motion, exposing your innards. Despite the pain, you watch in silent morbid fascination as she plunders your organs, humming to herself. |

I played it for a while, and it was fun, but I didn't finish it. I can't really figure out what all the hype is about. Best RPG ever?

I just couldn't like this game.
Personally, I think its overrated not under. Fallout was better.
Gothic is another one that's overrated.

I don't know why it wasn't mentioned but Wizardry 8 is listed as number 24 on the list.
This proves its udnerrated - it wasn't mentioned here

Well, I like BG and many other types of games, but Planescape Torment was nothing but a huge chore of reading endless paragraphs of text. I thought it was pretty bad, it should have just been labeled as an interactive novel. |

Yes, you had to actually read to enjoy the game.
And that is why it sold poorly. Too many people who'd rather see eye-candy over substance. Too many people who don't like using their brain.
Planescape Torment had the best RPG story, best setting, best NPCs, best hero. It had a mediocre battle interface, though I liked that as well. And it was different from the mainstream fantasy RPG that no-one deviates from. And again, the characters were unforgettable. Morte the skull was hilarious. Dai-kan was a deeply interesting character with the most revealing story. Annah was more than just a cheap two dimensional vixen. I can't recall most characters from other RPGs, but these three just rolled off my keyboard onto the screen. An unforgettable experience.
Oh, but I'd better stop typing. Wouldn't want to make anyone read too much.

As was said previously, if people wanted to read a book, they probably wouldn't have bought a video game. There is no reason to speak condescendingly about those people. I personally would rather play a game than read a game, but that doesn't mean I am illiterate. |
