Avernum 3 Review at Gamer's Pulse |
|
Gamer's Pulse did a review of Avernum 3, and found it to be less than average, rating it 10/50. Here's the summary they offer:

Avernum 3 was released too late... about ten years too late. The graphics and sound are dismally bad, and the interface would have been bad even before PCs had mice. If you can get past both of these issues, you get to an RPG which is decent, but not up to the high standards of today.
|

Avernum 3 is a wonderful crpg. Many quests, a good skills system, simple yet powerful magic system, etc. This guy obviously doesn't get what makes a good crpg. The interface is tolerable. It just requires more than a joystick mentality. Avernum has a nice little story and loads of good dungeons and fun combat. _________________ 'nut |

The same site will give a game with "overautomated gameplay but great graphics" an "editor choice" award, while a game that has "I can see nothing fun or even remotely exciting about this game" etc on every other line a "must have" recommendation.
The main gripe with AV3 seems to be the pictures not the gameplay but then again , how can you ever roleplay unless the piccies are buttiful hmmm |

I am pretty sure that the type of person who buys this game knows what they are getting in terms of graphics and sound effects, and doesn't care. On top of that, Spiderweb give away a generous demo, so a buyer has no excuse for not knowing. I don't think it's necessary to grade the Avernum series on the same criteria as big studio releases. _________________ "You two are a regular ol' Three Musketeers." |
