this happened to me while cheating, maybe this is your case? if not then I don't know what it maybe, but if it is you'll have to uninstall and reinstall the game, it's the one and only way I got (the demo) working back again, never cheated again...

Access Violations are mostly due to shadowing or caching in your BIOS. I would turn off VIDEO MEM Shadowing, System BIOS Caching in your CMOS and see if it persists

I used to get access violation errors all the time. From what ive gathered, they result in the game rendering too much stuff, and running out of memory / space to hold it all. I incrased my swapfile size from 380 megs to 570 megs and i haven't had an access violation error since. Also i had a save game that would give me an access violation error every time i loaded it up, so i turned down all the texture and model detail, and it loaded up fine. It might help.

I run Gothic on a o/c'ed Athlon 900mhz, 384 megs of ram and a voodoo5 with 2xfsaa in 1024 reso, runs like a charm.

It is better to set ur swapfile size to a certain size (having min and max the same). If you let windows manage it, it should work OK, but the problem may be that you're running out of hard disk space to increase the size. Another reason setting swapfile size to a constant is that windows wont need to keep resizing it, making it more efficient.
