Merchant Problem

I'm in chapter one and none of the merchants in the square of Khorinis will trade with me because I'm a convict.
Unfortunately, I killed Canthar in jail, thinking he wouldn't be able to spread the word about my past, but it looks like he did anyway?
According to one of the online strategy guides, this shouldn't have happened, but it did.
Is there anyway for me to remedy this problem so they will trade with me again?
Do I need to move to chapter 2 for this to correct, or am I screwed since I killed him, and have no options?
Any help would be appreciated.
