RPG of the Year Voting @ Gamespy

In the annual popularity contest hidden in the words "Gamers' Choice of 2005", Gamespy is running the "Gamers' Choice for Best RPG/MMORPG" (dang it...there they are, lumped together again) category among a host of other 'awards' to be voted upon. You can head over to vote for your favorite of 2005:
City of Villains, Dungeon Siege II, Fable: The Lost Chapters, Fate, Guild Wars, The Matrix Online, X-Men Legends II, EverQuest II: Desert of Flames, SW Galaxies: Rage of the Wookiees
You can vote for RPG/MMORPG at Gamespy and find links to other categories.

Hehe, I started a thread in gamespy's main forum asking why they keep sticking RPGs and MMOGs in the same catagory.
Dang that is annoying

2005 was really a light year for RPGs...
I haven't played one title on there list
But 2006 will be much better with Gothic 3 and Oblivion - two top titles - being released next year...

Of course, the responses you've gotten in your thread don't seem to be coming from people who have actually played RPGs. They're probably the Diablo fans who think that that's a true RPG.

Here's the link for those of you who'd like to participate:

Here was my response to those who say "Why separate them?"

Here is my response to the "keep them together" folks:

I don't personally see why this is an issue at all with you. The RPG and MMORPG share many of the same conventions (levels, experience, heavy dialogue/story, NPC interaction/quests, etc.) so why not include them together? I mean, the MMORPG is a subgenre. I hope you don't honestly expect them to divide the polls that much. Even ones like City of Villians, with it's focus on action, isn't that different from the other RPGs. Basically, you're making a mountain out of a molehill.

RPGs have elements in common with FPS games as well. Does that mean that we should lump FPS/RPG/MMORPG games together? I mean, really. Guildwars is NOT an RPG. The goal of GW is for players to participate in PvP once the 'RPG'part of the game is over.

MMORPGs are inherently different than RPGs in a lot of ways, not the least of which is that single-player RPGs are STORY driven. MMORPGs are PLAYER driven. Single player RPGs have a definite storyline, clearly defined goals/quests/rewards and a specific ending (though there may be more than one based on the path a character chooses to take). MMORPGs have nebulous goals though there may be static quests that can be completed and the story continues ad infinitum. Single player RPGs are PvM (or AI controlled NPCs) vs. MMORPGs having the PvM component AND the PvP (or GvG) as well.

There are very compelling reasons to separate the two. There are very few 'cross-over' players. One who enjoys 'RPG elements' are usually either in the SP RPG camp or the MMORPG camp.

sadly the answer for this year is dungeon seige 2.

It was not an interesting game to me but it was well made.

I didnt try fable though if that could have counted possibly that was the best rpg.

It was not dungeon lords I can tell you that. Many of the other ones you guys are mentioning I didnt try.

I own all of the non-MMO's and tried most of the MMO's.

My vote went to Fate. I really like that game ... I also love that I can finally have a nice western RPG to get my 9 year old into that is acceptable in terms of content.

Well, in case you haven't heard, rumor has it that I'm always right. But if Gamespy says its bad, who am I to contradict them? They are awesome.

If I were you I'd go with the others and not give it a shot. Its graphics are not up to todays standards, it has TB combat (what savages still like that crap), and it has meaningful choices that impact the game and events greatly. Simple and streamlined for ease is defintiely better. My vote went to Doom 3 for best rpg.

"Well, in case you........They are awesome."

Ahh well whats the point, some people only hear what they want to hear..
I went to GameRanking which catolog all reviews for most all games (not perfect) and the Gamespy was the only review out so far, not sure why this is so hard to understand.

If I'm always right that means I'm fantastic at jumping to conclusions.

I don't know what you are looking for in an rpg, but I do know Hammer and Sickle is almost everything I look for in an RPG. Hammer and Sickle has even brought it another step where if you do not do something that also impacts the game play. Everything you do or don't do changes the game. I don't have the game yet, just the demo, and from what I heard from someone who seems too like the same type of game that I do, the real game is a lot better in every way.

And the best thing is that Night Watch is also coming out in 06. Nival is the only non-indie devloper that is doing any type of game I'm interested in. Then you have AoD, Ashes, and Grimore. 2006 should be the year for real rpgs made how they should be made.

Sounds like a great year shaping up in 2006.

Now we can keep an eye out for Hammer & Sickle thanks for the tip/suggestion/recomendation

We can still seem shocked you voted it best in 2005 considering it hasnt come out yet
