Grisoft is the one that give out AVG scanner freely, very effective so far for me although my PC rarely get infected.

For firewall i use ZoneAlarm, better than most other if not the best firewall last i heard. It have free version too.

BTW, the "Sobig.F" is now officially the the fastest spreading e-mail plague of all time ----> http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030820/ap_on_hi_te/e_mail_virus_4

The msblast.exe also very infectious worm that appear last week. I got that one last week, ouch. Luckily my PC is well "armed" and kick the shit out of the virus. You also can use google to find good solutions to remove that virus manually.

If you're concerned that you might have this virus or don't have an up to date virus program, here is a link to a free online scan (no registration required) that might give you peace of mind. It's a little slow right now due to high traffic, but it's an up to date scan until you can get something better to use:
