what tom thought about NWN

uber hype right? lookit the trailers and you cant help but think "woah...how could they screw this up???" right? here's how:

lets start from the beginning: you pull it out and start your character. this was pretty good, and true to DnD. but the actual customization of your little character dude was really lacking. yeah you can make 'em fat skinny or mid, and can choose from about a dozen faces and hairstyles, but i was really looking forward to some mmorpg style stuff. i wanna be able to change the eye color, add scars, create my own tattoo, and like...you know....uber detail. but heck, i can get over that.

so you finish the character and start walking around. BAM. right there. the dude's jogging around and i can't help but ask myself "uhhhh...why's this half orc barbarian run like a fruitcake?" now granted the walking effects were fine (especially on the female chars ) and i suppose the running was acceptable if you were playing a girl. but since it takes like five hours to walk across one section of the city, and i cant stand watching the dude run, a serious element of gameplay goes out the window.

but no biggy, i'll just take my time and walk. so lets kill some weak goblins in the academy basement. all right thats exciting for all of five minutes. to put it simply, COMBAT = BOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING!!!!!! i want some action, you know? i dont wanna watch a knight slay a dragon, i wanna slay the dragon. i thought that was the whole point of rpgs!

but i could get over that...i guess...i mean they put a lot of effort into the combat animations, the guy sidestepping and weaving and dodging and hacking and whatnot. but moving along, lets buy some armor, shall we? i wanna see how many different ways i can make this char change after character generation. but theres almost no change. whats with this??? i want an inventory system ala morrowind (With a little bit of nox thrown in, just cuz i like wearing cloaks )

(sigh) but i guess i can live with that... lets go get some baddies for queen whats-her-face. ok thats done. lets go get some baddies for queen-whats-her-face now. ok thats done. guess what? MORE BADDIES FOR QUEEN WHATS HER FACE NOW! now, this gets better after chapter one, but if you lose half your audience after a few hours of play, not much point in it is there?

ah well...i'll booze it up at the local taverns to make myself feel better. (and yes there are whores....and a patch thats let you see it all...dont know if this adds or detracts from the game....?) hey look, this chick wants to join my party. sure hop on board. hey...this big dudes got the same idea. come on man, join the party. wait...where'd whats-her-name go? get back in my party. there you go. hey big guy, come back. he lady come back....

...oh i get it...no party....WHATS WITH THAT????????????? that was like my favorite thing about the bioware rpg games and they TOOK IT AWAY???? i aughtta smack those guys.

well jeeze forget this pile...i'm gonna make my own game with their tools...i gotta learn what now? i cant do anything cool unless i learn how to program it?????? wha????? i play games to get away from all the textbooks. what is this????

oh and guess what. you defeat the big baddy and become the legendary uber savior of whatever...surprise surprise and woop-dee-doo...

so to sum it up... mmnnnnnnbllleeeeeeechhhhkkkkgghhaflaggendarr...

IMHO of course. i'm sure plenty of ppl simply loved this game...for what reason is totally beyond me...but hey whatever floats your boat...i know i didnt like it.

I definitely didn't think it was that bad, but I can understand what you're saying. In defense of Bioware, they did state clearly there wasn't a full party, although I did miss it myself.

But this points to it's strength. No, you can't have a full party SP, but get a few mates along and you can.

Throw in excellent modules like Witch's Wake and Lone Wolf and it was definitely worth the money for me.

Are you okay Tom? You ain't drunk, right?
Today you wrote two long post with tons of complaints about gameplay and the mod making tools, each for NWN & MW....
And both games recently got few GOTY or CRPG genre awards from several big gaming sites.

Personally, NWN is a decent game: combat? - okay, good implementation of 3rd ed. of D&D, decent graphic. Sound probably could be better, the official campaign? - acceptable but not good enough.

While the single-player campaign itself did not impress me, the DM tools, multiplayer and the tool-set did. If you want to make great games then you need to learn to program at the very least. There is no getting around that.
Several of the mods have impressed me. It's great seeing what creative and talented people have made the toolset do and the wonderful content they have created that you can plug in. Bioware should hire some of these people.

I still really enjoyed NWN. I prefer the 6 party system, but Tommy (Rogue) and I went through the game very nicely.

I agree the some of the mods are absolutely awesome and the multiplayer is better than the single player.

Maybe we've been spoilt with Baldurs Gate etc. and Bioware couldn't quite reach the standard this time, but I still thought it was a good game.

True, multiplayer can be really intense. I've had a few experiences that just can't compare to other games. For single Gothic is still my favorite, for the graphics and personalized controls. Climbing, swimming, things you can't even do in NWN, for example. But having a guy laughing insanely coming out of the darkness with two flaming swords, had me almost jump out of my chair. Btw (LP) trying to decipher that review was not all that much fun for me. I got the gist of what you were trying to say. One thing that really annoys me is people who write a review and say here are all these things I did not like, but I can live with it. If you can live with it don't complain about it.

Neverwinter is crappola!

I didn't like it either. You get all these skills and such but most are automatic or you just don't really notice. Click to hack or load up your spells. Boring and not worth the money. You can all poo hoo how grand it is but you watch, Biowares next title won't sell near as much because people will stay away! Kinda like any game with Sid Meir, or was that suck meir?

bio's next game is star wars knights of the old republic and it is coming for xbox and pc ... i'm pretty sure it'll dwarf nwn in sales and that is no small task given that nwn has sold very well ...

...now that said i surely hope kotor is a better game because i couldn't stomach nwn single player game any more than about 20 minutes into chapter 2 ... very rarely do i not finish an rpg but that was one of em ... icewind dale 2 is another that i couldn't finish ...
