Party of three
   

Has anybody finished the game with a party of three (or similar small party)? Were you successful?

I have some serious challenges with my 3-member party. It takes me usually several tries to kill a single bunch of critters on NOVICE level... My first party has six members and they are about lvl 13 and been to Trynton, Swamp and Umpani base. I played on average mode and did not have too much reloading.

My current party consists of lvl 9 rogue hobbit (my tank), lvl 8 ranger hobbit, lvl 8 samurai hobbit. I am currently at the crossroads of Arnika road and monastery road (the northern crossroads). In the monastery the figths were tough, but I managed after some reloads. Arnika road seems difficult.

My samurai and ranger are just starting to get those nice status ailment spells (terror, itching...) although they don't work that well yet (backfiring, lasting only one round...) as I have put most of the points this far to attack skills. The challenge is that the samurai and ranger rarely get those critical hits at this stage - and you get proper weapons only at a later stage.

If you were successful, what did you do differently? Would you suggest some changes in my party composition? I thought profession changing might be good first aid (such as make my samurai a mage for a couple of levels to get some killing spells). And then get Vi to join the bunch in Arnika and the gadgeteer in Trynton. What do you think?

Yah, you can finish the game with just one character all the way, no RPC's.
I've finished with a couple Trios, i haven't tried the combo you have; there's a lot of protections you won't have, unless you do take Vi, who can learn Priest spells. I usually take a level as a Rogue for anyone who doesn't otherwise get Stealth, they can get it to max in one level by defending at the max range of some Seekers for a few hundred rounds.
Anyway, the 'easiest' trio, with or without Stealth, is probably a Bard, Lord, and Ranger. This covers all the important protection except Missile Shield, and has Locks & Traps, haste, Alchemy, and if the Ranger is a Mook, covers all the nasty weapons but the Cane, which i don't think is worth the faerie and curse. If you switch the Bard to Fighter as soon as you get the level for all the Instruments you're happy with, they'll be able to wear and wield the really heavy stuff, and still be able to play.
The biggest problem you'll have with needing Vi is the way she gets when you drag her where she does'nt want to be.
Arnika Road is famous for being out of proportion, this is one place where Stealth will let you sneak past all those mobs. Stay off the road, and if you can't run away in Combat, back yourself into a wrinkle in the cliffs.

I know when you go in to the mines you might run into some but are they just random? Or is is better to get back to monastery?

The monestary is your best bet. As you mentioned, the mines have some. The "front door" of Marten's Bluff always has a few. They also pop up regularly as random critters on the three "road" sections (Arnika Road, Arnika-Trynton Road, and Northern Wilderness).

Well, if you're already surviving in the Swamp, you can get your Stealth practise with anything that shoots low-damage shots, or that misses you most of the time. Slimes, Frogs, Plants, as long as you can get them right at the edge of the combat radar screen, usually miss a lot. Just watch out for close-attack mobs that might wander by...
