well i'm sure others would have a different opinion but here's some of my thoughts:

for me it depends on which guild you choose to play eg for me ranged weapons for a mage seems somewhat of a waste of skill points as magic can be used instead

i'm sure others will say the same but it all depends on how you like to play. personally i'm not the best with dodging and fast attacks so i primarily focus on 2h weapons with their greater damage (and more importantly) longer range

as for ranged weapons i personally find them more difficult to master as while with melee weapons you can lure most creatures out one at a time before attacking, if you attack a creature in a group with a ranged weapon if it most likely that the entire group will charge you. it is however possible to lure individual creature from the pack using the same method as a melee fighter but by the time the creature is of sufficient distance from the group the advantage of the ranged weapon if significantly reduced to a small handful of shots. another minor point is that you will also have to replenish ammunition with a ranged weapon which although not excessively expensive can mount at lower skill levels and longer distances where more shots miss

another thing you should be aware of is in the way your skill levels increase (others could probably explain much better than me but i'll have a go anyway). after you increase in rank in 1h (ie at 30% you become a fighter rank and at 60% you become a master), any subsequent increase in the skill will cost double (ie if normally 5sp for 5%, it will become 10sp for 5%) with the excess being distrubuted to 2h until such times as both skills are of similar rank (although not necessarily similar percentage). this also works the other way round (ie if 2h is of higher rank than 1h) as well as with ranged weapons (ie if bow is higher than crossbow or crossbow is higher than bow)

if you however decide to go the way of ranged combat i should warn you than you will not be able to increase your skill past 60% until chapter 6 (the final chapter)

here's a final comment that i'm sure others will agree with, there isn't really a wrong weapon class to specialise in as depending on how you like to play all classes are equally viable (although i still vote for 2h )

there's probably much more to say but there's a few preliminary thoughts (and i'm sure others will also have much to say about the topic)

I totally agree. If you are going to be a mage, train up either 1H or 2H to at least 30 BEFORE choosing to join the monastary. Train up your strength first also, as these cost double afterwards.

hm... yes he's right.
but when it comes to thieves or bandits, i first use my crossbow (almost every bandit is dead with 2 shots )
and when they come near me, ik draw my weapon (i like the 1H, because you can swing as long as you want)
and kill them off.

but with creatures, i also like to come nearby and then go back.
then only 1 or 2 creatures wil follow you.

I prefer one-handed combat, it's a lot faster and you need much strenght to wield two-handed weapons.

I like the 2h best, more damage and a cooler look
Also like to train up one long-ranged weapon too, this make it easier to avoid a huge group of some kind of monsters.

or a paladin
I am a paladin with 1h (love it, fast and deadly) and some ranged magic.
Palas are the same as mages - do not need any bows/x-bows, at least after they start getting runes.

But, I have used bow only once or twice in my game.

I would suggest, that only a merc needs bow or x-bow as ranged support to his melee.

Hey, first time on the forum . I play Gothic 2 for the second time now as a mercenary. I think the bow is great, im now in chapter 4 and have a dex of 99. With a ash bow damage 45 dex 50 i believe i can kill an orc with 3 shots, now i just got a new one bow damage 65. lets see if i can clear that siege at the castle with 2 shots for every normal orc
