I can't get Wizardry 8 to play. plz help me |
|
a friend of mine lend me a copy of wiz8 that he has ordered from the states (it isn't available here) and when i'm going to start playing (the menu loads fine) the game crashes and returns to windows without any warning.
i have a PIII 500, riva tnt2 ultra 32mb, winXP and directX9. I've tried to play with openGL and directX...but its always the same. |

Also I didn't get W8 to run on winxp, but fortunately I had XP/98 multiboot and the game ran just perfect under win98.
Perhaps win98&95 compatibility modes (in W8 shortcut properties) would help? Or getting an illegal W98 copy as an multiboot option. |

I think Wiz8 should run on XP.
Stupid, but necessary question: did you updated all your drivers (mainly for graphic card?). Well Wiz8 is old game, but you have old card and so you can have older drivers..., also try to download latest patch for Wiz8. |

I've run Wiz8 on a WinXP (Home ed) rig for over a year. Not a problem to be found. Definitely follow Danicek's advice and do the driver dance. Also, given your much older video card, you might make sure you're using software acceleration. _________________ =Proud Member of the Non-Flamers Guild=

Well, you're right about that, because Sir-Tech is out of business for all practical purposes.
Check the properties on your video card and turn all hardware acceleration off at that level. That might help. Also, how much RAM do you have? Wiz8 will use a ton of memory if it can, as will WinXP. Since you seem to have an older system, you might not have enough memory to make it all "play nice together". _________________ =Proud Member of the Non-Flamers Guild=

I have 256mb. And my card wasn't very old by 2001 standards... |

One other possibility is that the Safedisc copy protection doesn't play nice with certain CD drives. That was supposed to be fixed with the final patch, IIRC, but perhaps that's something to look into? You might want to look at the official Wiz8 Technical Support forums for additional details about that issue. _________________ =Proud Member of the Non-Flamers Guild=

definitely i think it's a graphic card problem. If that was the case, the game would hang with the 1st sirtech logo.i'll buy a new comp in the next month or so, and i'll try again then. thnx for the help |

It's not a Windows XP issue. When I upgraded to XP (new computer) a few months ago, my version from when Wiz8 was first released worked fine. I patched immediately to 1.2.4, even before running it for the first time. Perhaps this is the key. _________________ The world itself shifts and changes and fades to mist like the strings of a minstrel's harp, and mayhap the dreams we forge are more enduring than the works of kings and gods.-Robert E. Can't get Wizardry 8, Version 1,2,4 to install on my XP. The install comes up, I click on install it hesitates and disappears.
Got any ideas? Sure will be appreciated.

Try going to the CD and starting the install manually. _________________ Freeeeeeedom! Thank heavens it's summer!

Have you tried the compatibility mode?
It may also be that the file is corrupted. Which would suck. _________________ Freeeeeeedom! Thank heavens it's summer!
