How exactly does sneaking work? (also: making weapons) |
|
The only conclusion I'm able to come to is that once you're trained in sneaking, you just hold down shift to walk and people will tend not to notice you, the extent of your success being based on dexterity. However, with a dexterity of 30 I can't even sneak into the house to complete the Thieves Guild initiation quest. Surely they can't expect your dexterity to be much more advanced for the mere initiation. The only conclusion I can come to is that I'm doing something wrong. A search through this forum shows that I am unique in my stupidity.
I'm not looking for a walkthrough. I've already checked one. I know I'm at the right house and that my sneak skill has not disappeared by way of a bug. What I'd like to know is whether I'm not sneaking correctly, or if my dexterity just too low. How high does your dexterity have to be before you can start making effective use of the sneak ability?
Edit: I'm tacking this on because it's something else I want to know. Is making weapons the same as making potions? As in, do you have to spend LP every time you want to learn how to make a new weapon? I'm trying to refine my character in the early stages of the game, but the manual is less helpful than it should be. |

I thought the 'X' key was for sneaking but I'm just starting the game and 'X' does nothing. Will 'X' work once you are trained to sneak? Or...? |

That was quite right, thankyou. When you're trained in sneaking, pressing X causes him to change his stance and he walks slowly. Where did you pick that up? Are there manuals out there more detailed than the one that I got? |

In order to sneak you have to learn it and press "X".
I dont know about smithing but for making a certain potion you have first to "learn" it. _________________ I come from space. From outer space! |

O.k there Deckchair,
You have the skill but it is OTHER npc's or monsters that detect YOU.
the game of Gothic and G2 relies heavily on interaction and self intuition,
because of this the gamewriters have given each npc/monster a set of
"senses" which are writen into the gamecode, there are many senses which are linked to npc's, Like:-
assess- guild
" - murder
" - theif
" - hostile the list varies with the type of character, these senses are
running all the time for each character within an invisible bounding box,
My current pc-hero has a dexterity of 300 and also has the sneak skill and
still cannot get into many places, it also is controlled by the gamecode. _________________ Forever aches my wretched soul, for Chromanin locked in that dark hole, though crypted key i've yet to learn, he knows one day i will return. |

So if you're in the militia you'd be a more successful thief than if you were in the mercenaries? And even if you've never been caught stealing, you emit a more suspicious aura if you're in the thieves guild? Maybe I should rethink joining the mercenaries.
Thanks for that added detail. I feel a lot more comfortable with games when I know what the program is actually doing in the background. |

Actually, Deckchair, you could have just checked the controls.
To answer your question, no. If you were in the Militia and caught stealing, you have to pay the same penalty (or at least I think so) that the Merceneries pay. _________________ OMG! WTF?! MONKEYS!!!!

Yeah, but like Cassia said..
Just don't get caught.
As far as I know about the weapons, yes. Except for the mercs final weapon. _________________ Just watch out you don't stress yourself out.

you need to pay 5 LP for each new weapon you want to make, e.g. if you want to make the large ore dragon slayer in ch5 u need to learn it first which uses 5 LP. i dont think you get the chance to learn how to forge new weapons untill the later chapters anyway, if my memory serves |

I don't like reading manuals until all intuitive and other clues are exhausted. I read above that sneaking requires the trained skill and I noticed the 'X' key function from the games keyboard map. 'X' is one key that I did not remap but I remapped and/or got rid of optional keys that I don't use. Anyway, I noticed that 'X' wasn't doing anything and at first suspected there was something wrong, i.e., running and jumping work but sneaking didn't. |

You don't need lp for the dragon slayer weapons. My hero had no lp left when he found the secret library and still learned it. _________________ Just watch out you don't stress yourself out.
