The Matrix Reloaded thread got me wondering about everyone's favourite movies?
I'm a Scorsese fan, I like most of his films that I've seen, particularly Raging Bull, Mean Streets and Casino. I'm also a big Coen Bro's fan... there isn't a film of theirs I dislike, and Miller's Crossing is one of my all-time favourites.
Best filmmaker ever, IMO, has to be Akira Kurosawa... I've seen a relatively small selection of his films, but every single one has been fantastic... especially Rashomon.
But if I had to name a single all-time favourite, it'd be The Third Man. It's a beauty

the best film of all time is Carry On Camping, this is a fact. there can be no debate on this. Anyone who disagrees is just wrong.

I guess there's different ways I could define "favorite". Let's go with the ones I've watched the most times:
Sixteen Candles
Grease
Monty Python- Holy Grail
Brain Donors
Die Hard
I wouldn't dare call any of them "landmark cinema", but so it goes...

And about a large number of oldies I can't think of now, but when I used to surf by them I'd have to stop and watch the entire flick ... Spencer Tracy and Cathrine Hepburn (Guess who's Comming to Dinner, Desk Set, etc) are great together, I love Cary Grant and, of course, Bogart.
Edited: i missed MP and the HG in dte's list ... so I can agree with ONE film at least *lintra laughs*

All time favourite is hard to tell... right now, I'd say The Shawshank Redemption for me.

Anyways... I forgot about Magnolia. Wierd, but really good.

You should try Mullholland Drive (Sp???) if you like Magnolia. It is a weird flick that requires some thinking on the viewer's part ... a cool story as well.

I've seen it actually.
I think it was a so-so movie, like most movies from David Lynch (although I liked it better than Highway Lost and Blue Velvet). But, yeah, it was kind of hard to keep on track with and did require thinking. But it became too wierd with the whole "mini people" part.  |

@Hexy - At the time I saw the movie I had a really good explanation of the mini people (the ones who greeted the blond when she got to LA). I can not, for the life of me, remember what it is now!
I *think* it had to do with dreams and expectations buried in the dark haired woman's mind. Her mind used them as foils, the pressures of innocent expectations of the past perverted by actual subsequent events that fell far short of the dreams going in. Dang! That was a mouthful and I am not 100% sure it is what I meant to say *Lintra rubs his temples and looks quizzical*
Yeah, they were kinda weird. But they fit the story quite well.
Mrs Lintra was interested in seeing the film since her, now departed, uncle lived on Mulholland drive in RL. She did not recognize any of the scenerary, but then, that is not too surprising as the uncle died many years ago when she was in grade school.

I loved Mulholland Dr too, it kept me guessing all the way through (which I like) but it seemed like it was going to end without me getting a handle on it, just like Lost Highway (which I don't like) and then literally in the last seconds of the film it all made a bizarre kind of sense, and I was blown away. I loved it, but I can totally understand why some people hate it (you should see the flame wars on imdb!  )
And Magnolia too... forgot about that one as well. What a great film. |
