All of the stories in 2002 had some aspect of the usual RPG cliches so they all had their flaws. Arx Fatalis had the most interesting and original setting and that helped create an interesting story for me. |

I rather liked Divine Divinity's story and setting. It was different enough to seperate it from normal fantasy settings and stories. Sure there were dwarves, elves and wizards in pointy hats, but it just felt different. The humans seemed to be on the verge of creating real industry and moving out of the "dark ages". The quests were fun to do and drove the story forward. Hmm... I think I'll play it with a wizard now... er... after WC3 and JA2 though. _________________ Freeeeeeedom! Thank heavens it's summer!

I loved Divinity too; that would be my second choice. I do wish game devs would escape a little from the character always being the prophesied divine saviour. |

None i can think of. Neverwinter Nights? I suspect the story was influced by H.P Lovercraft's writtings, especially about the "creator race," it just felt related to the "ancient enemies" in the call of chutlhu, etc.
The best story came from Mafia, but it's not CRPGs. |

I'd like to see one where you get to play the prophesied unholy destroyer conquerer and bane of everyone's exsistance! _________________ Freeeeeeedom! Thank heavens it's summer!

Definitely!
@Remus, I just finished Mafia and it was a darn fine game with an excellent story. My pick for best overall game of the year. |

Yep, excellent game!, that's why i am puzzled when Gamespot chose Freedom Force as game with the best story. But then again i never played FF, the reviews i read just sound like a game with story for kiddie - too much for me.
Okay, what is so good about this Mafia? here's my experience:
1) Graphic and sound. Excellent, with many details on landscape, nice looking vehicles, and the incredible lifelike facial appearance on NPCs (It's the best i ever seen from PC games). I think the graphics is generally better than in GTA 3, and run smoother at 1024*768 resolution on my PC. Weapons and car's sounds certainly far above average, and music/soundtrack as realistic as the music during 1930s.
2) Manipulations on the game's plot and good story. Flashback technique to intertwine and build the game's storyline. The game starts with protagonist telling his life story, to a cop (betraying his boss), from early 1930s as lowly taxi driver after Great Depression (1929) in America, and on how got drawn in with the mob, became an important man in Mafia family, etc. The narrating method by protagonist during certain cut scenes is just like in the movie Casino. The flashback also like the technique in Godfather 2, although in the movie it's more like a two plots develop in parallel.
3) Mechanics of the game. I always dislike the limited save option, but in Mafia, that option never bothering my enjoyment of the game. Interface and control?, very much like and as easy as FPS games. |

Best story? Probably WarCraft 3.
EDIT: Belh... doesn't belong here. _________________ Like some bold seer in a trance;

Now that would definitely make for a great storyline! Truly I am also very tired of the divine savior plotline. I sometimes want to be the evil necromancer or barbaric slayer of kings. It's kind of hard to be bad when the main storyline revolves around you saving someone or something. That's why I like true free-form RPGs where you follow the main storyline but your choices heavily determine the outcome. Morrowind was great on choices, but the choices you made did not seem to affect anything. |

Games with bad characters just do not motivate me to play them. Example is GTA3, Blood Omen 2...
I think that bad (negative) character type will grow adn develop in new games and I do think it is right. When I play, I ussually become part of game, I deeply feel with my character, nearly same as in books. Therefor I do not do negative things in games (steal, murder innocent people). I simply try to choose right way, I also try it in real life. |

I thought that Morrowind had a good story cuz there is more than one story, lol
But the bestest of all of the bestest storys was Star Gate SG1 on the Sci-Fi Channel on Direct TV on my television set !!!
Also Dungeon Seige had a good story
Just Kidding about DS, lol
EDIT -- Personally i want a game in which i am the Giant Purple People Eater and i go around eating people !!! now that would be fun !!! Especially if there was 80 towns to explore (and munch on)... Also i want a game where i am a Witch and all the Witch Hunters are after me... holy crap that is an awesome idea, i have got to write this down !!! cya i am going to go write this down |
