I just accepted Thorus' offer to be a guard. Does this preclude my getting magic power as well? I really would like to avoid melee combat as much as possible (I suck, big time), and the archery/magic combo sounds appealing. Plus maybe Thorus won't want me to be a guard when he finds out how useless I am in hand to hand combat!!!

You have to be a Mage to have magic.

So to directly answer your question: Yes, yes being a guard eliminates your chance of learning magic.

But it's not too late go to go bow skills.

It eliminated your chance to be a mage for now. Wait and be patient. Another opportunity might offer itself later.

The walkthru said:
"Ask if you can become a fire mage first, then tald to thorus again and ask if you can become a guard.
That way you can change your mind ANY TIME YOU WISH AND STILL BECOME A FIRE MAGE"

Well Ive tried both ways and so far I cant become a fire mage after becoming a guard.

I dont know what the FAQ walkthru ment by any time you wish...argh!

You have to take Corristo's test, but don't follow him up the stairs, then become the guard. When you want to become a Mage you go up the stairs.
