Using powders/bombs

how do i use powders and bombs once I'm in battle? The manual doesn't seem to mention it, at least not my manual, it's only 67 pages long yet i've seen references to page numbers as high as 101 here!

Click to bring up the "combat icon panel" (click on the little white icon that shows what your character is doing that round). In the top row, the second icon is for "Use Item". That will bring up a list of items in that character's inventory that can be used, which includes powders and bombs.

If the stuff is in the Party inventory, use the Equip button...
Artifacts and Throwing skills are good for this, and if you're too low, the bombs and powders can backfire like an overcast spell.
