SOE just sent us this press release confirming rumors of an earlier than expected release of 'EverQuest II':

SONY ONLINE ENTERTAINMENT’S EVERQUEST® II SHIPPING NOVEMBER 8th

-The 800-Pound Gorilla of Online Gaming Is Ready to Play -

SAN DIEGO, CA – October 25, 2004 – Sony Online Entertainment Inc. EverQuest II is the highly-anticipated follow-up to Sony Online Entertainment’s original EverQuest, the most successful and longest-running 3D MMO role-playing game in North America.

“After more than four years in development, the wait for EverQuest II is almost over,” said John Smedley, president, Sony Online Entertainment. “We’ve invested heavily on development of the game to ensure that EverQuest II has the highest production values of any online game produced to date. Players will hear more than 70,000 lines of spoken dialogue in EverQuest II as non-player characters are given voiceover for the first time ever in an MMO game bringing the story of EverQuest II to life. EverQuest II also features gameplay innovations that make EverQuest II fun and exciting for all types of players and play styles, from hardcore gamers, to new MMO players, to those who play in groups, and solo players.

EverQuest II comes in three versions, all of which include a 30-day subscription (excluding SOE All Access subscriptions) to the game’s online world. The CD version and DVD versions of the game carry an SRP of $49.99 and include the game, an in-game item and an in-box item.

Limited quantities of the EverQuest II Collector’s Edition (DVD) are available at an SRP of $89.99. The Collector’s Edition includes a number of in-game items, including “paintings” of EverQuest II scenery to be hung on the walls of a player’s house, magical talking statues of Antonia and Lucan (voiced by Hollywood talent Heather Graham and Christopher Lee), and an exclusive pet baby dragon. The Collector’s Edition also includes an exclusive art book, bonus DVD with trailers, gameplay videos and behind-the-scenes footage, a soundtrack CD, a collector’s coin with a velvet pouch, a cloth map of Norrath, and two posters.

EverQuest II carries a monthly subscription fee of $14.99 for continuing access to the game world. What a sad pathetic joke, the thing is so bug ridden, they're just pushing it out the door to try be on the shelves before WoW. How sad and pathetic. And I know since I've been in the beta for months, this thing is not ready, and will not be ready. Just another of the same-ol, same ol in the MMORPG genre, bug ridden unfinished products pushed out the door because the pr/money men say so.

@ Negative Guest:

You are surprised by this?

Its like there is some secret underground society or something, plotting and scheming to keep the MMORPG stagnant and void of innovation.

"keep the MMORPG stagnant and void of innovation..."

It has less to do with that, and more to do with SOE once again releasing a game way before it's ready (similar to SWG). I got into the beta just recently, while the low level game isn't bad, the client has issues (crashing/bugs), the lag is pretty bad at times (my configuration is fairly highend). Others experience's might be different of course.

You aren't going to find a lot of innovation out there imo if that's what your looking for .. most games follow the same formula (which you could argue, sells games and makes money for them, so why change until the consumer changes and demands more than a bug infested copy of similar games already on the market).

Well, I've playing EQ2 beta for a month or so, and on its current state, its an awesome game. Its as polished as WoW? sure not, no other MMORPG ever has been on playable beta for so long, but for me, EQ2 is good to go and can be shipped, and right now I prefer it to WoW, which I tried too on the stress test, sorry but the cartoon graphics, "Dragon's Lair gone MMORPG" just kill me

I guess that everyone who posts how great the game is is below level 20...

It is sad but true. SOE designed the game from level 1 to 20 so everyone first believes that it is great. After level 20 comes the void and the point where you realize that the game is not finished at all.

My necromancer pet is worthless and thats about the only unique spell I get. Sure, SOE announced that they will add unique spells but the game is 2 weeks from release. Thats not really a lot of time to add level 20 to 50 content.

welp, ive played for two weeks, and i have come to the conclusion that EQ2 sucks and is not for me. WoW is FARrrrr better. Ive even cancelled my preorder. You cant solo. Im a soloer. The game is for groups, just like EQ1. Blah, and i HATE RUNNING AROUND ALL THE TIME LOOKING FOR THE NPC to finish a stupid quest. EVERYthing is TOO SPREAD OUT. You have to run to another entire zone in the city to find a different store. I mean, how gay. SOE sucks. what a disappointment...

... so i will not be buying EQ2, i will be buying WoW !!!

I also won't be buying EQ2, although I don't think it's a bad game, it's just that it has no pvp. That's a big enough reason for me to pass on it, although at least it was fun playing it in beta for free

I'm not sure what the big deal about guild wars is. I've tried it this weekend, really not sure if I like it. Doesn't seem to have that certain.. something.

But count me also as another that will be playing WoW.. seems to be the clear winner so far. (of course, that's my opinion).

I take that stuff back. EQ2 isnt bad at all. After re-assessing why i didnt like it, those arguments meant i was inexperienced and didnt know what i was talking about because i was lacking game expertise. Now that i know the game a bit more, i think EQ2 is a pretty good game. The community is really helpful too. Just make sure that you buy the guidebook, like i will be doing, else you will have a long learning curve ahead of you, in regards to the area maps, places, people, shops, ect... Grouping is actually pretty fun, but i do wish they had more solo content, a lot more.

However, World of Warcraft is STILL better. I will buy and play EQ2, but WoW is likely to get most of my attention. Also i will be getting Realms of Torment (aka Mourning), since its kinda Darkfall-like and i like that stuff (major PvPness is good stuff for certain ppl like me), unless its Lineage2, heh.
