By popular demand: the ever-returning question about Free MMORPG's covered. Now, a lot of people will tell you that they don't exist, others will show you examples that they do in fact exist.
The reality is that some text-based MMORPG's (or MUDs) are indeed free, as well as some temporarily open beta tests of MMORPG's. But generally the rule goes that you shouldn't expect the same quality in these games as in the subscription mmorpg's.
I have so many people seen complaining about why MMORPG's charge a monthly fee. Because some people know a lot more about this than me... Here goes what Raph Koster has to say about this: http://www.legendmud.org/raph/gaming/busmodels.html

A free mmorpg, most of you might have heard of already:
