security vs. lock levels--I don't get it!

I thought the level of a lock you were trying to pick had to be lower than your security skill to be able to pick it, but that's not true! My security is 27 & I picked a 36 level lock after 2 tries (the first time) and 5 tries (the 2nd time). I don't get it! At what point then should you not bother trying to pick a lock? How do you know? I was using an apprentice lockpick, so it's not like I was even getting a bonus for good equipment or anything...

Your security skill is modified by the quality of your lockpick, so with a good pick you can open better doors. If the lock is still too much for you even with a good pick it will say the lock is too complex, and won't waste your time. Even then it's not a one to one match lock level vs. security as I believe your attributes factor in as well. Hope that dheds a little light.

This is interesting...

I picked a lvl 20 lock with my stupid Orc Tank yesterday. He has a skill of 6 (dinged to 7 on that pick) and he was using a quality 1.00 lockpick (journeyman i think).

When he attempted a lvl 25, he got the error that it was to much for him.

Maybe it's security skill x tool quality x 3 or something

It did take him about 10 attempts to get it.

Hey, thanks!

Yeah, I knew my attributes played a role in it, but I guess I didn't think that having better equipment would let me pick more complex locks (especially since I was trying with an apprentice pick). So it will actually tell me if a lock is too complex? Perfect! Thanks again for the help! Now I gotta go back & try all those locks I didn't think I should bother with!
