I don't get this? They laid off half their staff after the release of MM9 last april, then they concentrated on Heroes only anymore, which is said to sell so great and they hired people again...and now this news?!?!
Well, who knows the whole truth...?! |

There was a thread on Gone Gold about this. I don't no how true this is, but a poster quotes an employee
'Well, on Friday, the 3rd game on which I've worked on from scratch has
been canceled.
3DO laid off everybody they could (everyone they had hired in the
previous 6 months) on Friday and gave a significant portion of the rest
60 days notice unless a funding miracle happens for the company (i.e. we
get lots of funding or we get bought out). There's a federal and
California state law which requires them to do this for employees who
have worked at least 6 of the previous 12 months.
... there's a
skeleton crew working to finish a handful of games.;

I don't know how true this is, but there isn't too many tears being shed. |

Isn't there?
:'(
NWC have created some of the best games I have played. Yes HOMMIV was adisapointment aafter II and III. But still it was nice, and showed some new thinking. Music more beatiful than ever!
And for MM9 I must say.. I like it! Yes there are many better crpgs out there, but it is still something more to it when you just sit down and let youre fantasy be driven away with the game....
But all this bad things started to happen when some one thinked of destroying the ("old and nice") world of Enroth, if you ask me.
3DO itself have created little I like, but 4 Horsmen is showing some promise.

Ah, but most people think of 3DO and New World as 2 different entities, and believe that New World could emerge from the ashes of 3DO as a new and vastly improved developer. A lot people are still scarred from MM 9 and Heroes 4, but most of the blame goes to 3D0. Troika managed it, as have many other developers, and it hasn't harmed them.
From Celestrial Heavens:
'As I'm sure some of you have already heard, in the coming months the New World Computing office will be relocating just north of Santa Barbara, CA. Despite rumors, however, this was NWC's decision, not 3DO's... they are not "making" us move. The new location will provide a nice open environment, which is always important for a small development team. Most of the employees will be moving, though a handful have elected not to, and as such we're hiring additional people for the new office. So if you happen to be a talented programmer or artist who has ever wanted to live in or near Santa Barbara, now is the time to apply!
It is hard to imagine what the future of the HoMM series will be. According to our source, Jon Van Caneghem, president of New World and creator of the Might and Magic series, is considering developing Heroes V using the existing Heroes IV engine. Not only will the series go back to its roots by having heroes out of the battlefield again, but players might see the return of cartoon-style and hand-drawn art in the next game of the series. Whether 3DO will still be involved in the project is still unknown."
Ironically, Black Isle seem to be exactly the same situation, and I hope they can also gain their independence. |

Well, I hope so to. but I can's quite see the light at the end of the tunnel yet.

Now haven't I put my self into interolays economy, but why is it so that companys that do great (?) one day, breaks down the next?
Black Isle situation is a little difftrent than NWC arn't they. NWC was acompany before joining 3DO. But wasn't BI a sub division created by Interplay for rpg?
But ye, I whould like see BI continiue too, they gave us the greatest crpg still ever made, Planescape:Torment!

While Interplay had huge hits through Bioware and Black Isle, they also had an awful lot of flops. Giants, Sacrifice, Hostile Waters and MDK1/2 while great games, also didn't sell a lot of copys, and the less said about the Star Trek games the better. Even now most of the console releases have been flopes, Hunter/ Run Like Hell, etc, and Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance sold no where near as well as the PC variant. Even Icewind Dale 2 didn't perform anywhere near expectations.
As for New World, I know a lot of former employees have joined forces with a lot of former Impressions employees to form a new company which looks very promising. A lot of small companys are succeeding in the PC gaming industry, so maybe they should go it alone. I remember loving Age of Wonders when it came out, and thinking that it's a shame that it won't be successful for a sequel. Now the third ones due. There's always hope. |
