I've cleansed the first shrine (Compassion). I know that afterwards, you are supposed to pick up the rune to show to Raven, however, after I did it, the rune is floating about 100 yards in the air. What's up with that? How do I get it down?

That game was full of bugs. But I liked it a lot.
I never had that particular problem so I dont really know how to help you, sorry.
One peice of advice though: Save often, and always save in a different slot. Sometimes you can encounter a bug that screws up the whole game and you wont know untill you have saved over your only save game!
Make sure you get the latest patch too. (v1.18f)
I would also recommend the unnofficial patches (v1.19f and the speech pack). The speech pack changes the text so that it is more in theme with the Ultima series. I dont think they updated the spoken text though so that is disabled. But personally I prefer having the more authentic Ultima feel at the loss of spoken text.

Where could I get this patch? hopefully it will help me solve some of my problems.
*POTENTIAL SPOILER* The forger in Trinsic won't make my blackrock sword for me. And LB won't transport me to wherever he is supposed to after he defeats Blackthorne*END OF SPOILER*

This is fairly common. Your can use just about anything to build a ladder and clime up to get the rune. staffs, swords, etc.

Sorry I didnt reply sooner, been tied up lately.

Cant remember exactly what to do about the sword. I cant even remember if you actually get one or not. I just remember that the people in that town screw you around a lot untill you fix the shrine.
