Guild Wars Interview @ HomeLan Fed
   

The Guild War PR machine has hit top gear over the last week. Today HomeLan Fed has an <a href="http://www.homelanfed.com/index.php?id=15398" target="_blank">interview</a> with developer ArenaNet's founders Patrick Wyatt, Mike O'Brien, and Jeff Strain. Interestingly, they worked at Blizzard before leaving to form ArenaNet. This last answer left me a little puzzled: <br><blockquote><em><b>HomeLan</b> - Finally is there anything else you wish to say about Guild Wars? <br><b>Wyatt, O'Brian and Strain</b> - Here are a few key points we’d love to share with your readers: <br> <br>Guild Wars is designed from the ground up as a competitive on-line game. <br> <br>With the mission-based structure of Guild Wars players will avoid common MMORPG pitfalls like endless travel, spawn camping, etc. <br> <br>And most importantly, there will be no monthly fee for Guild Wars in North America. In other areas of world, fee structures will be developed to best suit those specific customers, taking advantage of NCsoft’s existing and growing infrastructure.</em></blockquote>I would imagine 'free' would also suit customers in other places too!

So...if I connect to a US server from a non-North American location, I have to pay a monthly fee? I don't get the logic.

I can't quite get my head around it either. Personally, it would irritate me to pay for a game that was free for many others, so I might be turned off in the first place. I completely understand and support a reasonable fee for a MMORPG - but if it's free for most people, I'm going to balk at paying.

Otherwise I can imagine people flocking to free (and therefore overcrowded) US servers while fee-based local servers go relatively unused. But perhaps I'm short-sighted and it's a master stroke: free US servers make it the most popular MMO game ever and I just can't resist paying to join in on all this fun.

It all depends what is meant with 'fee structure' and why it is required. Somhow, they need to make some money. If not via a monthly fee then how are they going to get it?
If the way they intend to get it can only be implemented in the US for whatever reason then that just might be the reason they carge others.

I asked ArenaNet for some more information about that part and here's the quick response I received from Gaile Gray:

We have not announced any business model plan beyond North America for a few reasons. For one thing, we are still under negotiation to form a distribution partnership in Europe. In addition, in Asia, many gamers prefer playing the games initially at a game cafe for under a dollar an hour to determine whether they want to actually purchase the game. As you can see, there are many different factors in determining the business model and it would be premature for us to announce for the markets outside of North America. NCsoft as the publisher and a partner in Europe will make the decision for our customers in Europe. In the end, you can be assured
that the best interests of the customer will drive our decision.
