I am running windows XP Pro SP
I am trying to delete and move a couple of folders and files(Avi files). I get this error message.
Cannot delete [Folder Name or File Name]: it is being used by another person or program
close any programs that might be using the file and try again.
The point is, no other program is using the files / folders. i have restarted the comp so many times , shutdoen antivirus but nothing seems to be working. Any ideas?
Edit:
Never mind, figured out that I can do it through the command prompt. For some reason explorer protects some AVI files. |

Actually, it's a part of Microsoft's attempt to keep your system stable. If it prevents you from deleting files that a program is currently using, then it prevents that program from becoming unstable and thus causing the system from becoming unstable.
On occation, this means you'll bump into this error when deleting an old file because it is somehow still being used.

The operating system does not do this on it's own account. It's the developer who initially sets the access politics to a certain file he/she wishes to maintain(if using the os as the interface in the first place). It is true that Windows introduces this method, but if not properly used by the coder, it can be a pain as you experienced. You see, when openning a file, the os does the dirty work for you and lets you access it using an identifier (a number to, be precise), also known as the handle (but a different kind of handle, opposing to the window one). The problem appears (if you look at it that way) when developer overlooks to release the file handle once the application seizes to need the exclusive access.

I figured it out. It was a certain .dll file that was protecting the avi's. Just removed the key from the registry and now it's working good. |

This could not be his problem. All opened handles are gone when you restart the computer--which he did.
My guess is that the media player or some such program installs some form of background task spyware that is supposed to be "helpful" but does it in an akward manner which has rediculous side-effects.

The problem appears because explorer tries to preview the .avi file, and sometimes it can take several minutes after you've clicked the file until it's done. The solution is to remove the registry directory with the .dll file MC_Renzy talked about.
