Sorry if this is a stupid question...
   

...but how do you assign hotkeys to your items? I can't seem to figure it out and its a pain to do it manually all the time. thanks.

Press F1. You'll see a window with 9 slots (and one with fists). click a slot and you'll get the option of what type of object to fit... inventory item, magic item etc... just select what you want and move on to the next slot. Now pressing the corresponding number selects that item. Remember to save the game so this sticks.
