Revenant: Review @ JustRPG

JustRPG's own Nimish Dubey presents this somewhat mixed review of Revenant (for those of you who do not remember - Revenant was a game published by Eidos back in October of 1999)...

If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, then the folks at Blizzard must be drowning in the stuff. Diablo added a new dimension to RPG gaming with its simple interface and accent on action. More importantly, it sold millions of copies, spawned a successful sequel and a couple of handy expansion packs. Consequently, rarely a year passes without someone attempting to capture the Diablo magic in a new bottle (or jewel case, as the case may be!). And if you don’t believe me, just take a look at Throne of Darkness, Prince of Qin, and more recently, Dungeon Siege!

To give Eidos (or Cinematrix- after all, they are the developers) credit, Revenant is not an out and out Diablo copy. Most of the action is hack and slash but there are a few nifty tucks and trims that could have made the game a classic. Note the ‛could have’ carefully, for the biggest sentiment one gets while playing the game is regret for what might have been!

Revenant received a final rating of 55% (for an insight to JustRPG's rating system - check out this link).

why bother doing a review for a five years old game?

Asking why review now is a valid question, however out of purely historical interest I would disagree strongly with the reviewers overall impression and score. In order to a fair evaluation of the game you obviously have to consider its merits not in current terms but as of that time (in the dark misty past of 1998-99 when mammoths still roamed the earth).

Despite having some steep system requirements for a game of that era, I found this to be a great game. Much more interesting/involvng and colorful IMHO than Diablo. The combat system was unique for the time and was much more involved than the clickfest that was Diablo. I actually found this game among some oldstuff and reinstalled it just a few months ago. Would have played through it again except for issues of compatibility with modern machine/os.
