Microsoft on PC Gaming - Interview @ GameSpot |
|
Microsoft's Dean Lester has been interviewed at GameSpot about the "declining" PC gaming market and MS's future support. Here's hoping they have much more up their sleeve than simply plugging in an Xbox 360 controller:
GS: How will Windows Vista and DirectX 10, in particular, improve PC games?

DL: Windows Vista will help simplify how games, such as sports, racing and platformer titles, are played with the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows, in addition to making it easier to find all your games and update them easily. With DirectX 10, Windows Vista will create exciting gaming experiences as software and hardware become more advanced. DirectX 10 will allow developers to create games using detailed graphics systems that will give gamers the best possible gaming experience.
Right, looks like plugging in an X360 controller is about it. |

Why is PC gaming important to MS all the sudden? |
|
Because they want to sell you yet another Operating System! One that is sure to leave a horrible aftertaste once you take the bait; so obfuscate with promises of a great gaming experience. Why did I buy XP again? Oh yeah, it's pretty!
Why spend hundreds of Dollars (or Pounds, Euros, etc) more for a computer when the bulk of game development is taking place on consoles? Sure Nvidia and ATI would love to sell you TWO video cards instead of one, Creative wants to sell you a $300 gaming sound card, it's getting more than silly. All this so I can play games that are, ever increasingly, ports from console versions.
Microsoft must realize that aside from gaming, everything I do on a computer I can do on the machine I bought 5 years ago. If they don't want to support the OS, there is always Linux. |

One thing you never see brought up, and maybe someone can do a future article on this, is that ports to Consoles from PC's have often proved quite successful.
Ultima, Wizardry, and arguably Morrowind were all PC first games that were ported to consoles and even spawned their own following on those machines. They knew they had a proven market because Final Fantasy and Zelda were initially clones of the former two franchises. In fact, most modern Console RPG's look suspiciously like Ultima 7 with their limited menu choices.
There is debate that console owners don't want the complicated controls of PC's such as keyboards and mice as early back as the Atari days. Otherwise they would have simply bought themselves a computer.
However, if the PC games were redeveloped with the console controls in mind afterward they seemed to prove themsevles. |
