Can somebody (EverythingXen) please explain to me how the combat system works. Heres what I have been able to piece together from the manuel.
When you attack someone you make an attack roll agianst the enemies d20 + AC + Dex Modifier. If it is higher you hit them. The attack Roll is a d20 + base attack + strength modifier. This is probably wrong.
How is the damage calculated then if you hit. Is it just from the weapons.
And what is that roll you make at the start of combat. _________________ =Moderator of The RPGDot Shadows=

I think [not sure] once you make a successful "hit" roll, the dmg comes from the weapon...unless you critical hit. So say...you make a successful hit roll on a target with a dagger ....that'd be 1d4 dmg [since normal daggers do 1d4 dmg]. So there is basically two rolls to the hitting process...normally that is. So can anyone tell me what happened to THAC0? Is it in the 3E rules and I'm just missing it? _________________ = Member of The Nonflamers' Guild =

My 3E is not as good as AD&D...
You're pretty close but the victim doesn't roll. The attacker's roll + modifiers is compared to the victim's Armour Class + modifiers. If your total attack value is higher than their total AC value you have hit.
Damage comes from weapon + strength + other modifiers (items, feats, critical...).
THACO is gone in 3E.
I think the first roll you are seeing is intitiative which determines who acts first. |

That's about it, really. It's simple.
At the beginning of the fight Initiative is rolled. This number, modified by your dex bonus, determines who's effect goes off first.
After that's resolved and for the rest of combat attacks are resolved like this:
A check using your total attack bonus (base attack, weapon enchantment, strength modifier, spell modifier, bard song modifier... whatever) vs their total armor class (10 + dex + armor + whatever) is made.
If you get higher, you hit.
So a level 1 half-orc barbarian with a greataxe and a 20 strength and weapon focus great axe would roll:
1 (level 1 barbarian) + 1 (weapon focus greataxe) + 5 (bubba clubba strength bonus) = +7
A guy in full plate ( with a shield (2) and a 12 dexterity (1) would have a AC 21
So the barbarian would roll 1d20 + 7 and aim for a 21.
As for damage... it's widely variable. It's base weapon + TONS of modifiers. d6 is higher than d4... that's all there is to it. Higher is better. In the event of a tie for max damage, multiple dice wins. 2d6 is better than 1d12. (though the 1d12 may be on a weapon with a x3 critical, and the 2d6 on something with a x2.)
Yes... combat can get a little complicated in any edition of D&D... but 3e is the easiest so far. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

Ok, I think I get it now from your example EverythingXen.
Thanks, I don't know what I'd do without you. _________________ =Moderator of The RPGDot Shadows=

Spend more time playing the game than worrying about the rules? _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi
