Swamp area explosions...what gives???

I've being meaning to ask for some time now... In the Swamp area, near the middle of the map, I keep getting blasted with nauseous fumes. Although it looks as if it's coming up from the blackened ground, I can't help but wonder if someone is firing at me from the plateau nearby (the one with the barks railing up to it, only you can't climb up there). Just curious -- does anyone know what this is all about?

Yah, there's even a sign around there somewhere, warning about the vents.

Hm...check around the blackened area...if you can get a hand cursor, and you happen to have any empty bottles.....

i think that's a different blackened area--where you get a hand if you wave your cursor at it--the game won't let you walk into that one.

The warning sign is on the road shortly after you enter from Trynton. There are several "vents" scattered around the area, which show as dark spots on your map. The empty bottles can be used at the "tar pit", which is in the southwest corner of the map.

Thanks for the correction. Can you tell I really hate the swamp? I block it out after I leave. All those mosquitoes remind me of summers on the bayou when I was a kid. <shiver> I HATE mosquitoes. The swamp is, hands down, my least favorite part of the game.

There are 2 types of "landmines" in the swamp. First is the swampgas which emits out of large vents in the ground. While these don't show up on your map, they aren't too hard to spot if you watch your step. (P.S: the warning sign points out one of them, to show what they look like) The second type includes the "black spots" which are quite obvious on both the screen and the map. Stepping on these results in a firey explosion similar to a fireball.

Speaking of insects one hates, I'm not well with roaches. Probably because as a kid I woke up to one crawling down towards me on the wall beside my bed. In a panic I banged the wall, hoping to scare it back up to the ceiling -- as far away from me as possible -- but the critter only fronze up momentarily then charged towards me...at least it looked like a charge, but like myself it must've paniced.

Then in Wizardry8, I see enormous, crap-eating roaches acting aggressively in the Monestery and charging towards me... Anyway. Back to the game...
