is the test of magic "true" competiton among novic

i'm not sure where to put this, either spoilers or general because i ask a specific question, but still... let me know. i'll put it in spoilers just incase you have an answer, but really, the question is deep in here. there is a bunch of typing here.

this is a different kind of question, but i put it in here but i'm asking for an answer possibly but it may contain spoilers, oh well.

i guess i'm just 'quest for glory (the game series)' spoiled for asking this, but anyway, is it really possible to fail quests in gothic? i mean really, truly fail but be able to continue? i get the impression that after awhile, it's just "victory vs. dieing" all of the time. for example, the "test of magic" quest really got me a little angry. i thought it would be really cool to go up against these intelligent novices in this competition, and i believed i really had a battle of wits on my hands. but as it turns out, it's just a bunch of scripted stuff to let me win, i couldn't believe it. there was no way i couldn't pass the test.

i guess i shouldn't complain if i'm always the winner (unless i die of course, in which, reload or shut off the computer is the only option) but, it ruins it a little for me. i'm a novice, and of course i want to do good, but i had like 100 other things to do. anyway, i got the quest from the leader of the magicians for the first test, but then i ran off to do other things, like hunt wolves, sell their hides. i came back 5 days later to finally finish the test, and i said to myself "i'm going to go back to the monestary to see if one of the novices came back with the thing because i probably lost the first test..." anyway, no one is still around.

as i went on it, you can guess what happened. scripted ai waiting around to meet me and give me hints (even the novices were showing me the way!) and i eventually found the cave, no problem. then all of a sudden, a novice magically appears to act surprised i made it first (considering i was gone 5 days, what does that say about him?). oh well, you know the rest.

in quest for glory, you can actually flunk quests and still be able to go on (but with less respect). i didn't pass all of the tests, but was still able to exist in the game. after all of my blabbering here, am i wrong? can you actually fail the test of magic? lol! just incase i could've waited 25 days, sorry for such a crazy long message though, just trying to express my view. also, i am well aware that you need to advance in your profession to advance in the game, but still, there could have been some very cool, realistic way around this, isn't there? fail the test of magic but perhaps tag along as the right hand man of the novice to did pass it? you still get new stuff, just makes the game a little harder.

now watch, someone will respond and tell me: "yes, they can beat me" and i'll look like a fool.

you can fail some small and pointless sidequests, but not big quests like this.

BTW, the main reason, why i wanted to advance from novice to mage, was so that i could have my own room in the monastery

All the quests that you can fail are of minor importance just because of the fact you don't need to solve them in order to continue. Some things just need to be done because you follow a certain story.
