Blizzard - Game Controls for Parents @ Edge Online

In a press conference dealing with a host of issues, not the least of which was last week's suicide by a Chinese teen, Blizzard has announced a new host of parental controls for WoW:
After creating an administrative password for a child's account, the parent can, through a front-end on Blizzard's website, set hourly blocks of time throughout the week where the child is allowed to play, or choose from a number of presets, such as after-school, weekends, evenings-only. From that point on, all characters on the account are locked in to that schedule, including immediate disconnection if a change is enacted while the child is currently logged in.
You can read the whole article and follow several links to relevant news items at Edge Online.

I *DO* like the idea of parental controls. I don't have any issues with that concept at all.

However, the timing of Blizzard implementing such controls implies that either Blizzard, or the gaming industry, or perhaps both, are at least a little complicit with suicides or potential suicides where gaming is involved as at least part of the reason.

So if Blizzard and the gaming industry are complicit with gaming related suicides, then doesn't this affect other industries? Products? Services as well?

Some people commit suicide because they don't like their parents. Parents are now directly complicit.

Some people commit suicide because they don't like their life. God is now complicit.

Some people commit suicide while high on perscription medications. The whole medical industry is now complicit.

Some people commit suicide becuase they're drunk out of their minds. The booze industry is in big trouble.

Some people commit suicide jumping off buildings. A whole party of people complicit here from archetects to construction people to even the owner of such tall buildings.

Some people commit suicide jumping off bridges. Government is now complicit.

Where does personal responsibility ever come back into the scene? If this world doesn't re-focus the idea of personal responsibility then eventually, every product or service will somehow be able to be connected to some kind of suicide... which will drive up product liability insurance... which drives up purchasing prices for everyone... just because we refuse as a society to acknowledge personal repsonability as a primary driver of our own actions. Ridiculous.
