One question only: Will we see the release of Wizardry 8 in 2001?

So - will we see it in 2002 in your opinion or maybe not at all (worst case)?
As far as I learned, the game was already done in early 2001 and Sir-Tech just tweaked and de-bugged it. And the preview copy I got from Sir-Tech in March 2001 was excellent as well and looked quite finished...
But now Sir-Tech stands without a webmaster, without a publisher and without any site update since April 2001.
One might believe, publishers would die to release a game like Wizardry 8 (or Gothic) - but they rather be doing Age of Empires Clone #456 or an Action Shooter

I really would like the inside scoop on some of these things, I mean good games like these can't just be sitting there finished with no one wanting to publish them. There have to be issues between the developer and the publishers. Someones got to be out looking for a good game at a good price. I would have to think some of these game developers are "Holding out for a better deal" or something. I can't believe good games like these would just sit there collecting dust. |

Why isn't it possible for sir-tech to make an agreement with the same publisher as they use for the "Jagged alliance" games?
I know it's not the same game genre and so, but they had a fairly succes with the "jagged alliance" games, so why not trust them with Wizardy 8 too.
This game got to be relaesed! Also outside Canada! Common do SOMETHING!
Should we collect signatures for world release? Or are we again helpless viewers in the forces of greedy business. |

It would help to understand WHY it seems so hard to get a deal for a good RPG nowadays. Gothic and Wizardy 8 are still in the pipeline, at least Divine Divinity and Gorasul have found a publisher...

I remember "Interplay" used to be the one of the publishers with the most frequent releases of CRPG's. Today "Fishtank" is a publisher used very often in Europa, not only for CRPG's, Ubisoft, Infogrames a.o. are also still very active publishers. I don't think it's always the shortage of publishers, but more the core business between developers and publishers, which often delays the releases.

I thought that Interplay was going to publish, but Sir-Tech pulled out because of all the uncertainty there. It is unbelievable that neither Gothic, nor Wizardry have a publisher yet. When you look at the sheer amount of dreck that gets released each month (Just pick up Gamestar, and count how many reviews recieve more then 60 percent), it makes me despair for the future of the gaming business. |

I miss the good ole days, when there was an independent Origin, SSI on the top of its creativity, Interplay with no financial troubles and generally more publishers.
The business has advanced very far and since money makes the world go round, I fear we already passed beyond the peak of the entertainment software biz...

I was a beta tester for Wizardry 8 and I`ll explain why you probably will not ever see it.the game was basically done in Feb/March.
It was good, but dated then. They are trying to get a distribution deal with a company that will be as positive as possible for them economically. It ain`t gonna happen. If they cannot get a deal now that satisfies them ,they are not going to get one later because every month that goes by the game becomes more and more dated and it becomes less likely that a publisher is going to take a chance on it,let alone give them the deal they want.
After having played it from beginning to "almost" end,I can tell you that it is an "OK" game with very dated graphics.Don`t let the screenshots fool you,the levels are small and still use sprites for some objects. It is not full 3D as they claim. Fighting is tedious at best, smash your mouse through the wall frustrating at its worst. My best guess is that you will probably never play it(unless it comes out bargain bin someday)and that it is not that much of a loss.

@Garrett:
Well, I don't see the same dark clouds on the horizon than you. The influence of money was there all the time, and the lesson it gives to developers is quiet simple: "Your project should make sense economically". Sometimes, I guess, developers definetely should listen to this. No, I don't want any further tomb raider clone or something. But I sometimes wonder which of these financial troubles of developer companies were just selfmade.
Wishing the best for Wizardry 8 and its developers:

We will be seeing Wiz 8 in 2001. No doubt about that. Well, um, at least in Russia Remember ? Buka Entertainment is the publisher for that region.
Concerning the economic factors of game development: true, we've reached a point where a good project needs a 2 year minimum development cycle. The whole project sucks up major $$$ during that time.
On the other hand: do gamers need 80, 100 or even 200 hours of gameplay ? I don't think so. Every poll like "How many games have you actually finished ?" so far showed that most gamers don't finish the games they buy.
I think the developers nowadays are more than ever required to search for the right balance between project size and gameplay value.
And let's not forget about piracy. I think the gaming industry should finally come up with a smart copy protection system (maybe even use WindowsXP's activation code method as an example).

To the anonymous beta tester: Please, contact me via garrett@rpgdot.com. I need to make sure you are really serious and will keep your identity absolute private!!!
Besides: If the game was already finished by Feb/March, which would be also my opinion reg the demo, I don't understand why they don't publish it in Russia at least!
Wizardry is such a popular name in the RPG community, that this game shouldn't be unreleased!
Stefan: Well, one can't deny, that there are deinitely less publishers on the market than 10 years ago - and I doubt that great games like Gothic or Wizardry 8 (reg the demo, in my case) should be delivered to the public! Maybe the I painted the future too dark, but it is harder these days to compete with a decent game!
Anyway, I am glad that you found a publisher ))

Is this one available in the pirate channels ala Arcanum? I haven't heard much in the way of people talking about this game, more just talk about its name.
