My game runs painfully slow when I'm not looking down, and especially when there is much movement around me.
AMD K6-2 500
320 mb SDRAM
GeForce2 MX400 64mb
Soundblaster 16
I would rather not turn down the detail, as this is one of the game's major strengths. |

I guess the main problem is the weak cpu. Everything else should be good enough.
Some ideas:
-search the forum for 'Cacheman' to prevent swapping
-free as much memory as possible
-close every other application except cacheman
-defrag your hdd
-disable music and/or some sound features to save performance
-turn 360° before you walk |

"search the forum for 'Cacheman' to prevent swapping"
Is this (Cacheman)a program? I found no reference to it in the forums.
I'm willing to go (relatively) far to tweak my system, in order to avoid shelling cash out for MB & CPU upgrade. |

Do you use Cacheman, Gorath?
If so, what are your system specs? |

Thanks Gorath, I'll try it out.
Of course, I'll still be grateful for further suggestions from anyone. |

Cacheman didn't do it for me.
-I'm beginning to notice that, for whatever reason, many of us are having this problem despite CPU speed.
-The website suggests that WIN98 is optimal, though many of you seem to disagree.
-320 mb RAM should be enough.
-It most certainly is NOT the video card.
I had this same problem before with Ultima IX, but then I was using a Savage 4 16 mb card, with 128 mg of RAM.
Sure, I could use a new CPU, and maybe upgrade my OS, but I'm thinkin' there's somethin' else I'm missing here...

Well, to be brutally honest your cpu is not up to par with this type of game...
But, realize the game does not run SMOOTH on any system.
There is simply too much detail in the environments for a cpu to process everything without a chop here and there. I get a constantly 19fps on my system, and while that is good for this type of game, it still jerks from time to time when loading a new area.
I always notice it when I'm coming from the Brotherhood or the Old Mine and heading towards the Old Camp. |

Lack of smoothness is one thing, but my game slows to a crawl whenever I'm in the old camp or the sect camp ( haven't found the new camp yet). In the countryside, though , it usually runs mostly fine. |

To find out the frame rate type
toggle frame
in the console.
I suggest we define 'optimal' as 'constantly above 19.9fps'.
In an old thread in the forum was a detailed explanation of the reasons of Gothicīs overall performance.
@non-euclid:
Your cpu is 50% too slow and your graphics card acceptable but far from optimal, because it lacks bandwidth.

That's good to know.
I imagine your right, as the game runs the same no matter how low or high I adjust the graphic & video settings.
Unfortunateley it means I'll have to put off playing the game until I upgrade my MB. I don't want to remember the game in the same painful way I do Ultima IX. Sad, i just shelled out $45 for it...
