one of my quests is entitled "Isgaroth's Problem", and it reads, "Isgaroth has a problem up at the shrine. I should look him up."

It's that big structure on the road to the monastery. It will be on your right as you leave.

i beleive that if you're told about this quest before you become a magician (novice quest) and then if you join the fire magicians you cant actually do this quest

Are you talking about the black wolf quest? The wolf shows up anyway. At least you get the skin for it.

yup, that's it. argh. Isgaroth was right under my nose the whole time

still though, i'm having a tough time advancing from novice towards mage status. it seems i've done all the quests i can inside the monastary.

it seems to be a catch-22, however, as i know i need to be a mage before i can see Lord Hagen (?) and further the main plot quest.

any tips for me?

If you've done everything, talk to Parlan again. He should give you access to Library now.

Read all the books on stands in the library (because I can't tell you off hand which one specifically.) One book will tell you about the test of fire. Once you've read it, go to Parlan.
